bass fumigation...

Sign in to disble this ad
so my bass got stopped on the way to my joint from the US by the Australian quarantine department..

Unluckily, the quarantine officer decided that the bass is to be fumigated, under some section or another. Thus I don't really have a choice in this as the other option is to have it destroyed (eep).

I was just wondering if this could damage it at all, or whether it is pretty much harmless. Tis a fender P-bass by the way.

I don't think it'll hurt anything. We get crates of electronic stuff from China that have been fumigated and everything works just fine.

Of course YMMV.

I bought a used Rickenbacker bass and the next morning I took it to a shop for a full setup and when they took the trussrod cover off there were baby roaches in it. They added "fumigation" to the receipt. I wish I'd kept the receipt.

Hi.

No harm will be done, and if something happens, You always can try and sue them.

All it would've taken is one piece of paper, stating that the bass and the case was fumigated beforehand and You wouldn't had to worry.

Don't know if You're noticed, but there's a few species in your dry continent that really doesn't belong in there .
Some came by accident, some were brought intentionally. Want some more?

Your laws about import restrictions and material handling are trying to fight that.

Many moons ago I worked in a company that made agricultural equipment, bale-wrappers to be precise. Two of our largest clients were in AU/NZ area and we had to deal with those restrictions. Unfortunately money often comes in the way of reason and instead of using the required pressure saturated wood (expensive), the powers to be decided to use untreated 2*4 stock to build the supporting structures between the different macine parts. Both engineers of the company, me includced protested, but no success.

When the container reached AU customs they gave only one option: the container has to be shipped back, UNOPENED. Great.

The AU dealer did something, don't know what, but he managed to arrange that the container was gassed IIRC, the doors opened and as soon the wood bits came out they were burned in a bonfire, later that whole container was thoroughly fumigated. DID cost us A LOT.

Just my 0.02€

Thank's for the replies everyone. I just wanted to know what to expect if anything before it happened.
I am a proponent of our strict import laws so it would be hypocritical of me to now get annoyed by actually getting caught up in them
It is good that they picked up that it was contaminated.. The thing is I now have to wait weeks for it to be done and no claim for damage can be made (if any occurs) as part of the agreement.. which sucks, but oh well.. you can't win them all
