Bass Player Personality?

Sign in to disble this ad
I am not a bass player but I am a writer developing a male character who plays bass. That makes me a groupie of sorts, I suppose.

Do you think there is a "bass player personality?" If so, did you choose bass because of the personality you were born with? Or, did your personality develop out of the instrument you play and your role in the band? Or, a combination of both?

I appreciate any insight you would be willing to offer, and thanks.

PS -- I've been surfing TalkBass for a couple months now and I have had a great time getting to know the community.

The bass player is always the cool good looking guy. Mark King is a perfect example of this.

The bassist is the low key guy, usually the wise knowledgable one, who often keeps quiet until his wisdom is sought. Like, bass = zen status.

bassist is the cool skanky guy who doesn't really care about anything but jivin', groovin', boozin', and gettin jiggy with the ladies.

he usually never gets into fights with people, everybody pretty much likes him.

Bass players tend to be more laid back and less ego-driven than guitarists, as bassists are often less 'in the spotlight' than guitarists.

This is however a generalisation - there are exceptions.

laid back cool guy, somewhat geeky. loves his instrument. actually knows music theory. likes jazz, funk, fusion. sometimes friends with the drummer. likes playing the grove in the background over the solo up front.

During my years as a keyboard player, I have met more or less two types, one who is the "glued to the ground" dude, heavy player with lots of action and not a lot of talking, steady beat, in the pocket etc. Then there's the one who is a bit more hyperactive, still a lot of action though less "bottom" but always on the beat, in the pocket, and sometimes ahead of it, but totally aware of everything goin on in the arrangement.

Both types, the nicest guys imaginable and doesn't need a lot of attention, both types born with the clock set an hour too late (not when playing that is...) but with a constant smile on their face saving themselves even in front of the most nervous singer or stirred up drummer.

Helpful, rational, supportive, and friendly. Won't instigate trouble (well, not as much as everyone else in the band), but always has your back. Understands the that without a foundation, everything else falls down.

sees the big picture and wants to make things right rather than be the star. easy going. generally quite. usually the smart guy in the band that does know music and listens to a wide range of music

Someone who is open-minded to what others have to say. Laid back guy, quiet, and throw in a good sense of humor. Or maybe an odd combination: a loud mouth who is the center of attention, but when he picks up his bass, it calms him down. Is this character identified by his bass playing, or just something he does on the side??

A fellow that I've known at work for a couple of years found out that I play in a band. He said "Hey, I hear you play in a band. What instrument?" (and before I could reply) "No - let me guess... you play bass. That is cool."

I wonder what gave it away... .

The bassists intelligence is rivaled only by the exceptional length of his reproductive organ.

Takes care of the overall sound of the band a lot of the time. Makes sure that everything is set just right on stage w/o getting ocd. Team player.
