I'm a bass player who adopted two retired racing greyhounds recently. I don't know why, but I thought it would be interesting to see who else plays bass and owns a grey. If you're reading this and don't own a greyhound you might be thinking that I'm a bit looney... but I can guarantee if there are other greyhound owners out there they'll get it!
Maybe we should start a "Bass Playing Greyhound Owners Club."
Peace...

She's retired now, only running laps in the back yard when she feels like it. I've had her for a year and a half and she just turned 4 yrs.
Missy raced in Kansas. I adopted her about six months ago. She's 8 years old.

Had her for almost 5 years. There lose my Gain. We just lost our Male Taz to bloat last year. Las t week I went and checked out a white male at the local rescue group we are thinking of adopting. Greys are just simply the best dogs I have ever owned pretty low maintenance and just happy to have a family. I'll try to get some pictures up in the next couple of days. Just don't have any handy.

Fawnie was an absolute love, though. Her litter was going to be put down because they had protruding hip bones. She wound up at Greyhound rescue. Ironically, the woman who ran the place says she was the fastest 'hound to ever come through the place, but because of her hip she was taken to be put down and never raced.
This pic is with my son, a few weeks before she developed bone cancer. She was an amazing, joyful, beautiful, funny athlete of a dog.
RIP Fawnie. Run free, girl. http://www.doumbek.com/personal/pets/fawnie.html

I was walking down the street on Friday and saw a man walking his miniature greyhound. When the little dog ran, he ran just like a greyhound. I thought it was very very cool.

He was in a terrible state, filthy with missing fur, nothing but bones, covered in fleas and ticks, and scared of basically everyone, particularly men.
He's fine now though, he put on weight quickly and his fur grew back, and he gradually became more self confident. He's still cautious with people he doesn't know though and is lethal with cats and rabbits. According to the UK greyhound database, from his tattoo he was born in October 2002 and never raced. |

They do make great pets. They are very quiet and have a very laid back personality. All they need is food and some daily exercise and brushing 2x per per week They also need their teeth brushed which is easy and they don't mind it at all!! |

Bless you guys for giving these dogs homes!! There lives where pretty bleak awhile ago.
Our obedience trainer had two greyhounds and they were the coolest laid back dogs. We thought they be super-hyper because they're bred to race, but the handler said they are the biggest couch potatoes of all breeds.
My wife found one wandering down the middle of the road a few years ago. Put her in the truck and brought her home. Fortunately she had ear marks so we were able to locate the owner within hours.
Turned out her name was "Wideload". Not a vry good name for such a pretty girl.
Fast cars, dogs, girls and necks I'm a-tellin' ya

Not the best pic, but here are the knuckleheads;
Kenny is the red and Hogan is the brindle. Each is about 7 years old. Hogan raced in Alabama for a few years before retiring. Kenny was trained but had a fracture before making it to the track. Both are from the same breeder who always tried to do the best for their dogs.
They are completely different hounds. Hogan is a lovable idiot and Kenny is just too smart.

| | Greyhounds make good sound engineers - Big Ears! | | Join Date: Feb 2008 Location: Philadelphia, PA | | | My greys like music and watching Animal Planet Wow. Nice to see so many talkbass'ers knowledgeable about Greys. They are indeed wonderful pets, and can blend in with almost any family situation. We've got two cats, and everybody gets along fine, although there are some greys that are not small-animal friendly. In addition to racing, they were bred over thousands of years to hunt small game. Greys are in the Sight Hound family of dogs, along with Irish Wolf Hounds (bred to hunt, uhh.. wolves!), and the Afghan hound, among several others.
If anyone wants to know more about greys, or are interested in adopting one, here is the link to the National Greyhound Adoption Program. http://www.ngap.org/
The bad news about greyhounds is that they are basically breed to race, and when their racing careers are over, or if they are deemed non-competitive, most are "humanely euthanized." (as if there is such a concept). So when you adopt a grey you are often saving a life. But I don't want to be preachy here, 'cause that was not my intent of this thread.
So... other greyhound-owning or -interested bass players, let your "roos" be counted!
Cheers,
Salvatore ~
BTW, are they painting the newer Greyhound buses without the running hound logo? What's this world coming to? |

Jimi | Hey Jimi ~
Yeah, we'd love to see a few pics, for sure. Sorry to hear about Taz. How quickly did the bloat come about? Did anything cause it? Let us know what happens with the white male. Sal ~ |
