I'd put my AKG's against Dre's anytime.

I tried a pair of over the ear, and the sound was almost muffled like the low mids were overly contoured. Not even in the world of my Sennheisers or my cheap AKG's. Definitely all hype.

It's all about the connection to Dr. Dre. He made $110 million last year, most of it from his interest in Beats Headphones.

Today, it's headphones and smartphones.
Where I am, it still is (only with a school uniform). I'm happy with not-designer clothes and my Sennheisers which I picked up for £40 after working New Year. Can't complain at all.
NB. Don't own a smartphone. Don't need one.

My co-worker had a pair of BEATS in the office and let met plug it in my mp3 player. They didn't sound any better than my $35 Sony MDR-G42's.

My laptop has beats audio installed so if I am watching a dvd or listening to music I use my Bose in-ear which are really nice. Got them for free, was on a flight from mn to tx a few years ago and digging thru the magazine pouch in front of me I found them case and all.

Round my parts they've become part of this costume:

Which makes me think they're as overpriced as sneakers are.

Nothing to do with marketing, but I have a pair of skullcandy earbuds. They beat out the other cheap-o headset I had before, and they were only $12. I wouldnt swear by them or anything, but they serve their purpose well.

Beats are soo 2011. What you need are some Diamond Tears.

In all seriousness any $100 set of Sony, Shure, Sennheiser, Audio Technica, AKG, Ultrasone, Beyer, etc. will blow the doors off of a $300 set of Beats.

I have never listened to a pair but I have picked them up at the store and the plastic they are made out of seems so much cheaper than anything comparable in price. Considering how easy it is to break headphones anyways, I will spend my money with a company who has been making headphones for the last 30-40 years.

For fashion phones, the SOL's sound pretty good actually. Not the *most* detailed sounding, but a nice compromise between Beats style, Skullcandy pricing (you can get them for about 75 bucks)... but I agree on good monitor mix phones like AKG's or Sennheisers, or for sure Grados. They don't have the aesthetic, but are you posing or actually listening?

I just got a GREAT sounding pair of K44's for 20 bucks blowout on Musician's Friend, and they sound full, and I almost feel confident to mix with them. we'll see how they translate. At least comparable low end to my mid-level nearfields (M Audio).

Edit: I will admit, the build quality and "look" of the Beats ARE sexy and a bit lust-worthy, in a future-minimalist-Apple sorta way...I do dig the look...but yeah, I tried the big ones, and the mid-side on-ears, and the bass is just too hyped for me.

+1 LOL fashion headphones. Two words that don't ever need to be in the same serious sentence. If you don't have the sound quality what's the point?

Also the Monster Diesel headphones are terrible. Aesthetically and aurally. Are we seeing a trend here?

I've been curious how they sound. Not that I'd ever buy a pair, but my guess was they were dressed-up junk. Now I know.

I was in China in June, and a guy I was with who owned a pair of studio beats bought a pair of fakes for 400 yuan ( around £40 or $60) and claimed they were as good as the real thing. Upon listening to them myself, I can tell you that they sound great, but if a pair of Chinese fakes for a fraction of the retail cost are just as good, then maybe stick with the Senns. My $0.02
