Hate to break it to you, but despite the influence they may have had on many current artists, there are numerous people for whom the Beatles are a non-factor. I myself don't own any Beatles albums. Appreciate them, sure, but like them as much as, say, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, or Tom Waits? Nope. And that's just me. Look at today's record sales, and the top 40 charts. Relatively few people listen to rock-oriented music these days, let alone The Beatles.

Sure, but that's like saying that for most people Britney Spears is a non-factor and therefore a good rationale for not stocking more than 3 copies of some boxed set that she might come out with.

Whatever you think of Britney Spears, she has high album sales. And regardless of whether you or most of the people you know don't care about the Beatles, all three Anthology albums landed at number 1 on the Billboard chart so obviously the public demand is there.

Why a major retailer would carry so few in inventory is confusing, unless it was all they could initially get.

They said I could order it, and have FREE shipping to my door, I guess I'll get it in a few weeks...yeah they had a bunch of Neil Young box sets that just came out a while back, and they still have a bunch of Neil Young box sets, great artist but didn't sell that many in my particular best buy.

My 'stereo' box set shipped yesterday. I pre-ordered months ago from Amazon. It should be VERY cool, and the reviews of the remastering have been pretty positive.

Yes, it's an 'oldies' thing (both the music and the CD format), but it's worth the price for me to give this music a fresh listen.

Interestingly, I read a great article which talked about the original Beatles catalogue coming out on CD as the thing that 'kick started' the whole 'rebuy your old record collection on CD' back in the early 80's (I think that's when the CD thing really kicked in). Now, there are a number of industry analysts who are saying the remasters will be the last BIG CD format event. Pretty amazing when you think about it.

IMO!

I'm aware of the % sales. 30% for rock. All of rock. Therefore the majority of people (70%) are not listening to rock, despite it being the number one seller. Now out of that 30%, how many do you think listen to The Beatles, to the point of buying their albums? Remember, "Rock" is a vast, vast genre these days. To assume that a significant portion of the population regularly listens to The Beatles is to ignore the numbers. I'm not saying this is a good or bad thing, I'm just saying, that's the way it is. At least, it's my attempt to reason the OP's confuddlement.

I think they're Yoko Ono's backing band from the 80's.

Well, let's put it this way: according to RIAA numbers, there were 384 million CDs shipped in 2008. EMI is shipping 50 million units of the Beatles remasters. Apparently, the first pressing of 50,000 units of the mono box set has already sold out, at a retail price of $269. I would say that's pretty big.

I would say this is probably the biggest prohibitive factor. How many people are going to pay that much money for remastered versions of songs they already have? Probably only the really die-hard fans. Amazon has the stereo box set for $179 (lists at $259.98) and even with all the bonus crap they throw in and the fancy packaging, etc, I think there will be a lot of people who have a hard time justifying the cost. Do I think it will sell? Yes. Do I think it will sell as well as their anthology albums? Definitely not.

Why blame best buy?

I'm on lunch break at HMV. We got 3 Stereo 2 Mono's. Not our fault and been getting idiotic calls all morning.

And FWIW, the box is boring. It's just all the CD's together in one box, and two extra DVD discs. We're selling ours under cost at $189 though which you can't argue with considering you're getting 14 CD's. The mono box is worse, more costly and less extras. The sound quality is great though on the new stereo CD's.

Hate to break it to you, but for a small store we made $2k before lunch. Last shift I worked cash out was $950 total for the day.

All morning has pretty much been sales or calls about beatles products. They're still big. And after spending all day listening to them, especially the new discs, I can definitely see why and appreciate them more.

If anyone's interested, much bigger than hype around MJ and any other release in years so I don't see why people say it's a no factor

PS. Go triple post.
