Best Cities to live in

Obviously, we've established that KC is hell on earth, (or heaven if you like to commit crimes). I want to hear about the awesome places, and the reasons their awesome. "because I said so!" isn't a valid answer on this one, contrary to TBOT common law.

oh- it has to be a place you have lived. Visiting doesn't count.

I like Hattiesburg, Mississippi. New London, New Hampshire is great too.

New London is more for older people, but Hattiesburg is a college town. In that case, I suggest Hattiesburg to you. Of course, you have to love the South, humidity, and large bugs.

Dang you and that stupid "have to have lived there" rule. In that case, I can only suggest Altoona, Pennsylvania, Lacey, Washington, or Ontario, California. Of those three so-so choices, I suggest to you Lacey. Altoona is special to me, but old and tired to most. Ontario is run down from how it used to be. We do all right for ourselves here in Lacey.

I'll elaborate more later, on my way to the witch doctor...err, chiropractor.

my current hometown of ames, iowa just made it into the top 10 of some magazine list.

it is a nice place. small, friendly, no big city logistical hassles. i don't lock doors, leave stuff outside, etc. my family, all in brooklyn, are amazed that i don't have to worry about packages getting stolen off my front porch.

the weather takes some, shall we say, getting used to, though.

Nashville was awesome, lived right outside it for three years while I was stationed at Ft. Campbell. Just walk down the street until you hear a band you like, walk inside and have a beer. So great.

As far as I understand, Derweze is hell on earth. KC just sucks.

Ive lived in 2 places. West Covina, Ca - not a bad little town, and Hacienda Heights, Ca, about 7 miles away. Funny how much better things can get moving just 7 miles...

OP, ever consider a different country? Or are you referring to US cities only?

I love Spokane. While there may be a lot of petty theft and a bit of drunkeness and metheness it's relatively tame compared to say Norfolk Virginia. We may have one homicide every few years. Dealing with petty theft is as simple as not leaving anything valuable in your car.

I live in a medium density neighborhood adjacent to downtown that is a mixture of college kids,...artists/musicians,....drunks,....yuppies,...

It's not hella diverse here but I've hung out with people from The Netherlands, Turkey, Jordan, Wales, and the Caribbean here.

Unfortunately there is a lot of redneck and some close mindedness here, but that is tempered by Brownes Addition (my neighborhood) having a bit of culture.

Not a lot of good shows come through though.

Job market isn't all that great though and it's a working class town.

LA is towards the top of our list, after discussing it on a 9 hour drive recently. I'm going to probably have to move from KC to get a job after school (engineering), so I'm just thinking of where that might be

Dude, come to Chicago. I don't think I need to put together a pitch, since you know it already. But ask away if you have questions.

add on for ames:

it is a university town. so, it has a fairly educated and international community. good restaurants and culture. and while it has big drunken college guys, it also has very fine co-eds. they keep one young at heart.

and, an emerging music scene. you'll see. you heard it here first.

To be honest, I love LA. Its quite diverse. Scenery-wise you can visit the mountains, the desert, and the beach all in one days time. The area Im in is about 20 minutes from Downtown LA.
We practically live at the base of Turnbull Canyon which connect Hacienda Heights to Whittier. Its supposedly one of the most haunted places in the US.

Of all the cities I've liven in id have to say San Fransisco was the best, though what I have to compare it to isn't a list of stellar cities.
Anchorage, Is to me an okay city. It can be a major ***** to live in the winter and the lack of sun makes people cranky.
San Fransisco(Emeryville), My favorite real estate is pretty high but I like the climate and the people for the most part.
Los Angeles, Is a total ****hole. thats all i have to say about that.
Sacramento, Is okay, kinda of a weird place to live and the weather sucks.

The thing is this, about Chicago. I would hate feeling like I couldn't own a car, because of parking situations. Also, My wife is winter phobic. These two reasons I don't think we could live in Chicago.

- Vibrant outdoors city
- 3 ski hills to the north of the city, and Whistler/Blackcomb only 1.5hrs away
- Pacific ocean to the west (great for scuba, a bit chilly for swimming).
- Some of the best and least expensive sushi on the planet
- Mildest climate in Canada (rarely any snow, though we get more than our fair share of rain).
- Large percentage of athletic women wearing Lululemon the way it should be worn

It would take a lot to drag me out of this city

Later

Parking is more manageable if you live further north and west than I do, and the housing is more affordable, too. (I'm just hooked on my neighborhood and the lake.) And it's actually pretty cool to be able to take mass transit many places (like, say, bars ). You know all about the food, music, etc., so I won't bore you with that.

Can't help you on the weather front, although I can't imagine KC's much warmer in the winter.

This list gets published every year. I'm happy to say that I have lived in two of the top four cities in the world: Geneva and Vancouver. I have lived in five other places, but have to agree with Mercer.
