Most groups of security experts share their knowledge, so pick the one you're most comfortable/have the best experience with. Your best protection stays smart browsing.

It can be Limewire, Kazaa, Usenext, ever Rapidshare and Megaupload. Malicious scripts can be in an invisible flash file, they can be called with Javascript and CSS on standard web pages.
If you know you're an incredibly knowledgeable and careful user, you can go without an antivirus for some time, but it's risky business on a Windows PC.
Using Firefox is not for FF itself, but more to avoid using Internet Explorer, which is the most exploited/vulnerable web browser.

In fact, my dad made the switch from Norton to Avast just last weekend. We never thought he'd abandon that suite of security software.
It is amazing how much nicer Avast is in comparison. Norton is such a resource hog.

Norton and McAfee are awful.

Avira seems to slow down the system a lot less and while it's kind of ridiculous that it coughs up occasional nag screens/advertisments a mouse click is enough to get rid of them.
