Sign in to disble this ad
I'm having trouble deciding about meal planning for when i start weightlifting, i have a programme that suits me and am in the process of buying weights and a pull-up bar.
I have started putting together a meal plan and I think shakes would be invaluable for me as i have quite busy days.
I was wondering what protein shakes you guys use as i dont want to get one thats full of other junk but funds are limited so i cant go all out on the ultimate out there.
Must be able to get it from the UK as i dont want to pay P+P.
Any pointers?
Bass Junkie.

As always, YMMV.

I have been for a few years... No kidney failure yet.
Cookies n' Cream flavor is delish.
I should note that these prtotein drinks/shakes only work in conjunction with good exercise.. Sitting on your arse and drinking protein shakes is probably worse than eating potatoe chips.

add at least 30 minutes of cardio to your routine.
The other complement that probably you will need is creatine. Stay away from steroids and all that "look like hulk in five days" crap |

I'm not a weight lifter, but I indulge in protein shakes after long bike rides and runs that leave my muscles sore. Today I biked 30 miles of intense hills and later sprinted 4 miles. Tonight is a protein shake night!!!
From the cheap stuff to the expensive stuff, I've noticed that the cheap stuff doesn't mix for crap unless you use a blender. If you're willing to use a blender, you'll save a lot in the long run. As long as you can swig it down, that's about all that matters.
I'm definitely not a creatine fan. I've seen dudes fry their kidneys with that crap. A friend of mine also got horrible acne, but we suspect he might have been juicing. |

Shakes often cause gas and have a lot of crap in them. Just eat more protien in your diet. I have seen it suggested that you ingest as many grams of protein in a day as you would like to weigh. So, if you want to get up to 190 of just muscle, eat 190 grams of protein in a day.
Things I eat in no particular order,
Tuna
other fish,
red meat(not too often its harder to digest)
Hemp or soy milk. Has 8-11 grams of protein per serving
sprouted hemp bread with almond or peanut butter
hummus
"organic food bars" they have 21 grams of protein.
Clifs "Builder" bars. mmm tasty and they don;t have a bunch of crazy ingredients.
Eggs.
My brother and mother in law were body builders at some point, and they both agree with this general plan.
Try eating raw food also, it gives your body more energy and tends to be better for you.
Drink a bunch of water.
I finally got into a 6 day a week routine and I have stayed the same weight (195) but I have dropped a lot of my fat.

I understand for a competitive body builder who needs massive amounts of protein quickly and conveniently, but for the average guy (and especially the average teenager) you can easily get all the protein you need by eating normally or perhaps adding just a bit of protein to what you already eat. |

Local bodybuilders tend to eat a lot of quark (..I think, sort of stiff yoghurt used in baking etc.) since you can buy cheap cans of the non-flavoured stuff with plenty of protein in it and just add some fruit juice to sweeten the sour taste up. Cottage cheese is probably the best quick high-protein snack. In fact, I would recommend you to go to the milk product section in store, and find out what has the best price/protein ratio.

When I started bulking first, I radically changed my diet and started taking in lots and lots of protien, which was grand, it was the first time I realised how important my diet was. But although protein is protein, pure and simple, it's just a proven fact that people tend to notice better results from certain brands of supplements.(Just something I've noticed from buzzing around BB'ing sites for a while, bodybuilding.com and T-Nation most notably) 'Bodyfortress' is one supplement I've been well warned of..
You don't need supplements man, that's all they are, supplements. But remember they can be used to great effect while lifting...
EDIT:What is your goal BTW, OP....?
