best small hdd for apps only (?)

Sign in to disble this ad
hello, im in the market for the best and the fastest hdd to only run applications on. i still have a wd raptor around, but its been nothing but trouble, so i want a new main hdd. is western digital the way to go? ive been looking at:

Western Digital VelociRaptor WD1500HLFS 150GB 10000 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive (bare drive) - OEM

(was hesitant to post direct link...)

as mentioned, my last app hdd was a raptor, and i had no complaints until recently, which probably isnt the raptors fault, so im still loyal to the company. i have a pair of seagates for storage, and thats working for me, but i want the fastest main app hdd.

EDIT:

oh, just took a couple minutes, and have confirmed the raptor i have is 100% dead, so i for sure need a new main hdd. i dont know if its the 5k (i think) speed, or that its such a huge drive, but my seagate is painful to run an os off of it, and i dont really feel like running many updates given i wont use it too long

any input would be much appreciated. also, is there any problematic reaction from a mobo to an hdd that is going very fast? i know ram has various timing issues etc, so i thought id ask.

thanks again.

Yeah, SSD will rape a velociraptor but it depends on if you're willing to pay the premium. If not then the velociraptor is the way to go for hard drives with speed.

+1 for SSD

The prices for them aren't completely absurd, like when they were new, but they still cost a lot more than disk drives of comparable size.

+1 for SSD, though make sure to get a decent one, or the stutter will drive you nuts.

thanks. that ssd linked a couple posts above isnt that much cash at all. i can definitely tell theres lag using an os off a slow storage drive; gotta order one of those solid states soon.

hey, thanks again for the replys. the kingston posted above is reasonably priced, but my buddy seems not to like them (not sure why... been using their ram for a dozen years). that doesnt mean i wont end up getting it, but i just wanted some opinions on which ones are at the top of the list, and which ones simply suck. im not looking to spend more than 250 (well, maybe 300, but id prefer not to unless its way better). heres the list:

OCZ Technology
Patriot Memory
Kingston Technology Corp
Corsair Memory
Intel
SUPER TALENT
Crucial Technology
FILEMATE
Imation
PQI
RITE
SAMSUNG
Transcend

i know some of those brands, but for other products, not hdd. also, what specs should i be looking for? i assume the write/read speed, but is there anything else? i saw one listed as being silent or quiet, which is pretty cool, but i dont know what other options there are, and which are worth paying for (relative i guess). lastly, i dont have a micro sata port, but i can snag an adapter, so thats also not a big deal.thanks.

All SSD's should be "silent or quiet" since there are no moving parts. At least that's the impression i got.

I'd go for one of these, ranked from most expensive to least:

hehe... me too, but its not going to prevent a manufacturer from pointing it out i guess. now if i can only figure out why my flash drive and ram are making all that noise...

thanks. i will definitely be going with one of those in the next week.
