Big $$$$$$$$ - keeping things cool for the troops

I heard an interesting news item on BBC Radio 4 earlier this week about the money that the US is needing to spend in Iraq and Afghanistan on air conditioning. This amounts to something like $20bn ($20,000,000,000) a year.

BBC News - Today - US military's $20bn air con bill

The most interesting facts included the cost of gasoline being anything up to $45 a gallon because of the need to ship it huge distances on rough roads, often under enemy fire. A lot of troops have been killed delivering fuel for this purpose. When the fuel gets to where it's needed, the ineffiency of running aircon flat out, in uninsulated tents, just to get the temperature down from highs around 125oF to a tolerable 85oF also accounts for the enormous amounts used.

I don't want this to become a political discussion about the rights and wrongs of military involvement in the Middle East and if the thread heads in that direction it will be closed. But I thought this was worthy of attention as it gives some insight into the scale of operations and the extreme difficulty of the conditions under which they are carried out.

10 truckloads of insulation to save 100 truckloads of fuel doesn't seem to have been the kind of calculation being done. Maybe a tent makes a better statement of intent than a building. Too bad the tent stays for 5 or ten years.

Hi.

If one digs into the subject of (un-necessary) AC a bit deeper, that figure becomes peanuts in comparison.

Figures can obviously be twisted and turned to the benefit of anyone who happens to pay for the "research", but to me (I have some background in cruise ship AC), AC is such a hog for power that it should really be regulated better in order to save at least some resources.

"Easy for You to say, you live in cold climate" could be said about my view, but we are slowly, but firmly increasing the amount of energy wasted on AC over here as well.

Regards
Sam

We discussed this at work. We think the numbers are probably "upped" by calculating all the associated costs of providing the air con (ie benefit payments for people who died in convoys transporting it, cost of protecting power stations etc) without necessarily discounting for the shared nature of the costs (ie if something else was also benefiting from the same convoy etc). Im sure its still a huge figure, but its probably exhagerated for effect.
