Bringing the last post from the old thread here for consistencies' sake...

Some years ago, a kid shows up in the shop with a full D/A Merckx (kid's about 5' 4" or so, and the frame's a 61cm...warning flags begin unfurling...); he had bought a cheapo, cable-driven speedometer from Pep Boys or something and (brace yerself) had drilled a hole straight thru the top tube and bolted the speedo there. He had it in the shop asking for help in calibrating it, and "...what up with those pedals?!?" (1st-gen D/A SPD's).

Gonna do some archaeological digging in the big pile O parts, out in the freezing-arse garage- my semi-rookie friend can't get wid my skinny saddle- we'll try to set him up better. I might surgically remove the ugly seat biz from the fixer-upper/lame horse.

I was in my LBS the other day and a guy came in with a (fully assembled) BSO with no wheel bearings...No idea how it got into that state...

A 4'-long piece of steel tubing slipped over the the handle of your cup wrench will get the job done. Don't ask me how I know this.

More than once I've heard of guys putting a left side pedal in the right arm or vice-versa. That's determination.

Several layers beneath the overt stupidity of that act, there's an admirable trait.

Tenacity

...or maybe just more stupidity.

In that particular individual's case...

This.

As a side note to this, the frame (an SLX Torelli) actually survived the experience. I was able to back the cup out and install an Italian cup just fine. I did use a BUNCH of blue Lock-Tite on it tho.

To follow-up my request for assistance in the previous thread, I now have a mountain bike and will be taking it on the trails for the first time this Saturday to determine just how out of shape I am! I was all set to buy the Felt 29er when my girlfriend convinced me to wait until after Christmas to see if I could find any better year-end deals. She did this to surprise me with a Specialized Stumpjumper FSR Comp. I wasn't wanting a full suspension, but I sure can't fault her for it! It's a few years old, but her neighbor has owned it since new and has taken great care of it. I'd give y'all some pics, but right now it's at a friend's house waiting for Saturday's ride. I'll try to get some pics then.

Well, after 23 years of riding racing-style bikes, I think I might have to switch to a recumbent. Despite having my bars level with my saddle, I'm having persistent tightness / soreness in my upper back and neck, as well as tingling / itching / numbness in my hands.

Anyone interested in a 56 cm Merckx SXM with Chorus, let me know.

Oh, and if I get a recumbent, do I have to grow a beard and wear Birkenstocks?
