"Black hole" is now a racist term...

Quote:
A special meeting about Dallas County traffic tickets turned tense and bizarre this afternoon.

County commissioners were discussing problems with the central collections office that is used to process traffic ticket payments and handle other paperwork normally done by the JP Courts.

Commissioner Kenneth Mayfield, who is white, said it seemed that central collections "has become a black hole" because paperwork reportedly has become lost in the office.

Commissioner John Wiley Price, who is black, interrupted him with a loud "Excuse me!" He then corrected his colleague, saying the office has become a "white hole."

That prompted Judge Thomas Jones, who is black, to demand an apology from Mayfield for his racially insensitive analogy.

Mayfield shot back that it was a figure of speech and a science term. A black hole, according to Webster's, is perhaps "the invisible remains of a collapsed star, with an intense gravitational field from which neither light nor matter can escape."

Other county officials quickly interceded to break it up and get the meeting back on track. TV news cameras were rolling, after all.

I thought the story was from an Onion article at first.

Why is someone who is stupid enough to think the term, "black hole," when used to describe lost paper work a judge of anything or any sort of government official?

Jeesh, are some people are so stupid you have to worry about using the word, "black," no matter the context because they don't understand terms that should be common sense?

This story reminds me of a recent conversation I had with a very outgoing young female I know. We were talking about what we were like when we were kids and I asked her if she thought that she was an attention whore when she was younger. Her eyes got wide as she gave me a very uncomfortable look and I instantly knew that she was not familiar with that phrase.

in cosmology, there is a structure called a "white hole," believe it or not. sean carroll wrote an article in scientific american recently about how white holes may be used to reverse the arrow of time. (i didn't read it.)

anyway, i saw this commentary on this situation before coming over to talkbass: http://fliptomato.wordpress.com/2008...volve-the-lhc/

Sounds like their county commissioners are almost as big of morons as our city council and city attorney.

A few years ago there was a big stink over some public figure's use of the word "niggardly". Some sap who should spend more time in school than feeling sorry for himself got offended by it.

Yeah, I remember that.

Incidentally, when physicists first coined the term "black hole" for these objects, there was quite a bit of debate about whether it was suitable because of the pornographic implications in some languages (particularly, I think, Russian). Source - "Black Holes and Time Warps - Einstein's Outrageous Legacy" by Kip Thorne.
