Black Suits During the Day: Yay or Nay?

For years, it was common fashion for men to only wear black suits during the day if they were going to a funeral or worked for the Secret Service. Black suits were generally reserved for going out at night. Now, I've noticed that a lot of guys who wear suits will wear black during the normal daylight hours. It doesn't really bother me, because I've never been a traditionalist about most things. I wear a suit a couple times a week for the day gig, and I will occasionally bust out my black suit. But a lot of the cats I know who do have really good style would never wear a black suit during the day.

Thoughts?

Unless its patterned you shouldn't wear a black suit during the day unless you are dressing it down (eg white tshirt and sneakers). Otherwise you look like you are in the mafia or are on your way to a funeral.

This.

For day to day, plain black just looks a bit naff or that you're on the way to a funeral.

Your students think you're capable of wiping thier memory?

Bit counter-productive for a teacher surely?

It's interesting that a lot of the replies are from Europeans. There are definitely different fashion realities between Europe and the U.S.

When choosing a suit, I just look at what the President is wearing. It always works.

Plain black? I can't say I've actually seen people wearing that anywhere lately. Most have lines, stitching patterns, etc. I wouldn't see a problem wearing those on a daily basis.

Seems so. I would never ruin a good black suit with a pair of white trainers though. You need a good pair of hand-stitched Brogues. In black, of course.

Mohawk- good comeback...I got nothin'

Correction: you never ruin any outfit with white trainers because no one should wear white trainers.

Sorry. Did I misread your first post? White t-shirt and trainers...meaning white t-shirt and any colour trainers except white?

By the way, suits should be worn with shirts and ties. Unless you are Don Johnson and its 1985.

White training shoes...or 'sneakers' as I believe you folk over the pond call them. Which is just as bizarre to me as 'trainers' is to you, I suppose.

No bro, no t-shirts with suits. But life is too short to wear black during the day, have some fun.

Depends on the cut of your suit and the look of your sneakers: http://www.gq-magazine.co.uk/style/a...anvin-sneakers those can easily be worn with a slim fit suit and a shirt or t shirt.

It seems like navy blue these days is often so dark it's virtually indistinguishable from black, thus blurring the lines. That's the case with my navy blue suit.
