Nah, we'll have to agree to disagree on this one. Suits need a shirt, tie and shoes. Trainers are for jeans, shorts, trackies etc.

Maybe you can get away with that down south, but up here, we know how to wear suits properly. The north is gloriously bereft of hipsters

The North is, of course, known for being the centre of hip fashion.

Not all suits are the same a slim fit single breasted black suit with thin lapels like something from Givenchy or Balenciaga are designed so they can be worn casual. There not your daddies double breasted high waisted numbers with an unflattering block.

I don't really see the need to absolutely have a tie or shoes, it depends what "level of formal" you're aiming for.

I had a friend in grad school who could pull off the suit-without-a-tie look so well that he made George Clooney look like a schlub in comparison.

Me? I'm not so lucky. While I've worn a blazer without a tie on many occasion to great effect, anytime I try to wear a full suit without a tie, I look like a detective from some cheesy early 80s prime-time cop drama.

And anyways, if you wear a tie with anything but a double-windsor (also called windsor, or full windsor) knot, you're not cool.

Nothing's sadder than someone with a wide collar and a four-in-hand knot.

Technically, a Windsor is just called a Windsor, which distinquishes it from a Half-Windsor. I wear a Windsor about 80% of the time and a Half-Windsor for most of the other time.

If you wear a double Windsor knot in London you will almost certainly not be considered cool. You may be mistaken for a footballer though!

I might potentially like that depending on which variety of footballer we're talking about here

And the south is of course known as a hive of pretension, self-aggrandisement and delusion

I may cut a little slack on the tie, but hell will freeze over before its ok to wear a t-shirt with a suit, no matter how many designers you can name drop.

So, what I understand of this thread is that people of the island think they're hip but they're actually fashion-constipated?

I keeed

Well notwithstanding our Nortern brothers' inability to play the sarcasm game (or were you being sarcastic and complimenting us? ), I'd say it's good advice to avoid wearing plain black suits during the day in a work environment. Patterned black or ink/ midnight blue are fine. Plain black can be okay when worn casually, but I'd say avoid it with a tie unless you are going for an undertaker look.

One of the things we love about visiting your city whilst on away trips to Arsenal, West Ham, Spurs and Chelsea, is sitting in boozers having a good old chuckle at the latest Emperors New Clothes. Seems everyone thinks they are in a Davidoff or Joop advert.

Black suits are fine. Just avoid a black tie.

No more shallow than turning ones nose up at those who choose to wear black suits in the day.

IMO, of course.
