The blue screen of death simply means that Windows got "stuck" (in non-geek terms ).

There are many reasons this could happen, ranging from the inconsequential to the catastrophic, and everything in between. Reboot and say a prayer to The Almighty Gates that it's inconsequential.

You really should write down the STOP 0x000000 error and google it. Usually caused by an old driver or something after an update.

Use the "Last Known Good Configuration" feature. It's saved me many times. From Microsoft:
1. Start your computer.
2. When you see the "Please select the operating system to start" message, press the F8 key. [You may not see this, so just keep hitting F8 after the initial BIOS screen.]
3. When the Windows Advanced Options menu appears, use the ARROW keys to select Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked), and then press ENTER.

• With the Last Known Good Configuration feature, you can recover from configuration problems such as newly installed drivers that may be incorrect for your computer's hardware. It does not correct problems that are caused by missing or corrupted drivers or files.
• The Last Known Good Configuration feature uses information that is saved from the last time that you shut down your computer to restore registry settings and drivers. Therefore, you can use this feature only if you were able to start your computer successfully before you restore your computer by using the last known good configuration.
• After you start your computer by using the Last Known Good Configuration feature, changes that were made since the last successful startup are lost.

Personally i find if i set a Linux Boot disk in viewing range of my windows box, it crashes less. Just something to think about.

You may just need to update a driver or something. That won't usually cause BSOD on Vista but it can...especially for video drivers.

Could be anything...software corruption or hardware failure. If you've updated anything lately, you could try booting into safe mode and do a system restore to a point before the update.

On the other hand, if you haven't been careful with this machine and it is older (a year or more), and you've just installed kinds of stuff on it, then it could just be time to wipe it clean and reinstall the OS. That seems to do the trick most of the time. Hopefully you have a backup of your important files.

That explains an awful lot about why my Windows box has been behaving lately...
