Um. I think I might have lost my man card. I'm just watched Bo Bice play one of his songs on American Idol. It was good. I am a true monkey. This has been an odd day indeed. |

i guess since you only enjoyed a part of it, we can simply cut one corner of your M.C.
fail three more times and it gets revoked.
the gods are lenient, given your history.
for my part, i can only say that Randy Jackson is a very cool guy.

He's not that bad though. Certanly better than rest of it. But is the spoiled milk from the empty fridge really that great? |

| | I'm a tumbler, born under punches | | Join Date: Aug 2006 Location: Northern California | | | He has a good voice for southern rock. That said, he's a good example of the failings of a show like American Idol. Out of curiosity I took home an advance copy of his first album from a music writer friend when it first made the rounds for reviews. It was terrible. A reheated turd.
Trying to make a slickly produced, "modern rock" album with mass appeal was the complete antithesis of what should have been done with a guy like that. It just sanitizes away what appeal he does have. In a way it reminds me of when I went to see Gavin DeGraw years ago. Great show. Raw, soulful, even jazzy and funky in spots. When his actual album came out I was shocked at how everything I liked about that show had been scraped away in lieu of commercial schlock. I kept thinking, "this is the same guy?"
I told my buddy that what I saw happening with Bo Bice was that his album would sell initially but ultimately be viewed as a disappointment and interest in him would wane. Then when he had more freedom to make his kind of music, it would be a big improvement. I'm listening to his new album on Napster right now and that certainly seems to be the case. Still not really my kind of music (if I'm in the mood for new "southern rock" I like Kings of Leon) but it's the kind of album he should have been allowed to make the first time around.
For the record, I don't understand the appeal of American Idol, but it certainly seems to have some heroin like hold on a great many people that I previously considered rational, discriminating music listeners. In fact, two weeks ago my girlfriend got in a huff because I referred to it as a "karaoke show".

Turn in your card and nads at the next window, and be seated. When you hear your name, that's when you pick your purse, matching pumps, and 8 pairs of black shoes.

Now that was horrible but the judges loved it. And like the BigO was talking about I remember when Hank Williams Jr was huge in the 80's and I saw him do 'The Man Of Steel" song before the album came out. He did it with only an acoustic guitar and it was sad and bluesy and very cool. Nothing at all like the song on the album which was pop country. I think Hank's downward slope began there. Now he is a sideman for Kid Rock.
