They look similar to my JBL's that I use for mixing. But you can't tell too much without knowing the model.

I can't read anything on the tag in the picture.

Are bookshelf speakers generally powered, right?

Most bookshelf speakers are not powered. I would ebay to check the avg price, but honestly, they are probably worth less than that.

Mine are a different model and there really is no way to compare the two just by looking at them.

I'm guessing those have a 5" or 6" woofer along with a tweeter and are just a basic model.

In general, JBL has a good reputation and they make everything from fairly decent cheap consumer stuff all the way up to the highest quality pro audio. As long as the drivers aren't blown I'd say $40 is reasonable for those. Worst case, you're out only $40 if you don't like them.

I paid $300 for mine, new, but I'm guessing off the top of my head the ones you're looking at are not the same level of quality.

Yep. I've seen those before. When plugged in to an audio source, sounds comes out of them. I didn't feel right about buying them since my initials are MLJ.

I've had three pairs of JBL bookshelf speakers - blew the drivers in the first set during a stupidly loud party, still have the other two. They're excellent. Test 'em to make sure they sound okay (drivers not blown) and then buy them, for $40 you cannot really go wrong. I don't really see how they could be worth any less?

They won't be powered themselves, though. I would guess you'd need an amp capable of 30W RMS or more per channel to drive them, based on the ones I've had.

Man, another good deal LOST due to stoopid personalization from the prior owner...when will people stop that malarky?
