boot buffs, question about lace ups

Sign in to disble this ad
So I own several pairs of boots. I love them. I own one pair of doc martens on which the tongue always goes to the side (right on the right boot and left on the left boot) and I have found NO WAY to keep them in the center. The problem is that the lace grinds against my skip right at the bone and always leaves a nasty rash. This just happens with my docs, doesn't happen with my gripfast or fryes (both lace ups).

Any suggestions?

That must be a Doc thing. Mine also do that. It drives me crazy. Almost to the point that I'm thinking of throwing them out.

One of my Docs does that. The left slides left, the right stays in position. Same thing with a pair of Kenneth Coles. My other pair of KCs, same style just different color, does not do it on either shoe. Weird.

Does the tongue have two little vertical parallel slots cut into the middle of it? If so, you should thread one of the laces through it as you lace up past it.

Nope, it does not. But I have considered cutting those slots up to keep them in place. Thing is the fit of those boots is so that when you tighten them, both sides come together completely, so there's no room for the lace to go through the slots.

Excuse the blurry pics but my webcam totally sucks

The secret is to thread one of the laces down through the hole underneath one of the quick-lace eyelets next to where the slot loop on the tongue is, instead of just around the eyelet hook. You may have to bend the quick-lace hook out a bit to accommodate the stiff lace tip.

Then thread it through the slot loop on the tongue and in through the back hole of the next eyelet up on the other side (again, you may have to bend that eyelet's hook outward so it will allow you to push the stiff tip of the lace out through the hole)

It will allow the boot to be completely closed while keeping the tongue centered. Note the "missing" lace segment where the lace is actually going through the inside rather than over the outside. Make sure to choose the correct eyelets to match where the slot loop on the tongue is... I believe on mine it falls between the 5th eyelet from the top on one side of the tongue and the 4th one from the top on the other side of the tongue.
