Bossy bosses

They are IME a real pain particularly when the environment doesn’t appear to need a directive type of management. I guess people have different approaches to management due to their personality but apparently the world is full of otherwise perfectly nice people feeling the need to be callous on their collaborators. Why is that in your opinion?

In the past I couldn’t stand such attitude for a second but I’ve made a bit of progress since I understand authority better.

I once confronted one of my operation managers by telling him he could answer like an adult without yelling unnecessarily! Ended up being disciplined but later on presented my sincere apologies! He accepted and told me how sorry he was too! We have been good friends ever since.

What’s been your experience with them? How did you deal with the situation?

Edit: a short article on the different types of bossy bosses and how to deal with them

I left my last job because of the micro-management. In my experience, my direct managers have been fine to work for, it is usually the people they answer to causing the problems.

My sister in law is about to leave her job for the same reason, following many of her colleagues. Apparently, it has to do with an earlier change somewhere in her company’s management structure.

Some of my friends are experiencing a similar situation too.

A manager has some obvious prerogatives when it comes to running things but where is the fine line crossed?

In this economy, it feels to me like the employer has moved all the lines back and is taking liberties they may not when things are better economically.

Yeah, it’s definitely the perfect time for companies to fully use their conjunctural power advantage to harshly implement employees-not-so-friendly new policies (late arrival, sick leave, etc).

Anyway, there are thousands job seekers waiting in line for your position, so...

Last time I check, the strongest always rules apparently! What a paradox in an age where the talks are all about employees empowerment!
