Boy, was I ever p'ed off!

About an hour ago I had to go to my local grocery store to buy a bottle of Robitussin CF for my son. As I was cashing out the cashier asked me for my ID. I've had this happen to me before, and being a little grouchy to begin with, I said I had no ID. Then she asked me for my birthday, and I told her I had no birthday! Then I lost it. I told her I was 56 years old, the law was stupid, I had no intention of cooking any meth when I got back home, and she could put any damn date down that she wanted. I also told her that I was sorry, it was nothing personal, I just thought it was a stupid law unfairly targeting the innocent.

There, got it off my chest!

Lucky you... In Tennessee, they have to take our DL #'s down every time we buy any kind of cough stuff, or some of those other meth maker ingredients.

I was a cashier for 2 years and some of the things we had to ask for ID for were asinine, but others made sense,

I got carded for spray paint at walmart one time. I was pissed since a bunch of teenagers were huffing in the aisle when I picked it up.

Okay. You just lost me. I know a lot of people steal copper, because one of the last calls I got on the ambulance was a guy who'd tried to steal a large copper wire that he didn't realize was live. He cut into it with an axe. Unfortunately for him, the axe was conductive.

Now how does copper connect with meth? I know the ephedrine is a precursor chemical so I understand how decongestants fit in. But you lost me with copper.

Is my humor detector set too high again?

edit: I read too fast the first time. I saw it as "They steal the copper to make meth." I skipped over the important words in the sentence.

Wait... He just axed the line? No test or anything?

There was a guy on campus here that tried to steal a catalytic converter out of a car moments after it was turned off. Needless to say he got caught red-handed.

You get IDed for cough medicine? Why don't they just make cough medicine without the stuff that they use to make meth?

Way to take it out on someone doing their job. If that had been me, I would have refused you sale (I'm assuming cashiers have that right in the US aswell).

i can certainly understand you being upset when your expectations are not met. i remember i was not pleased the first time this happened to me.

still, i expect the worker bee you ranted to decided not to risk her job to help you. nothing personal? when you rant to someone, it gets a little bit personal. points for you for apologizing to her. later, ron

I had some cough medicine that seemed to work fine. Maybe it has the meth stuff in, but because we don't seem to have a meth problem over here, they don't ID for it?

It's the ephedrine that is the "no-no" ingredient. I haven't checked whether the "tussin" type cough meds have ephedrine in them, but those work pretty darn good.

Yup, pseudoephedrine is the ingredient that's used to make meth. It's a decongestant so you can get another "flavor" of Robitussin if you don't need the decongestant or substitute in another, non-controlled, decongestant. Dextromethorphan is the cough suppressant but they still ID for this in many state in an attempt to reduce robo-tripping by underage kids.

lol how many people do you imagine come to a store asking for it saying, "I don't have a caugh, I just want to make some meth"
I would guess not too many.

I understand the frustration, but the law is the law. If people weren't doing it, they wouldn't be asking for id. And for you to yell at the cashier like that probably wouldn't help your cause either.

It's not a stupid law, and it's not to target the innocent.

Sorry, but I don't see it that way. I think using a legal shotgun approach is the wrong way to go about this. A more targeted approach would be better. More effective policing and educating the young about the dangers of meth might be better ways. But what do I know, I'm no expert. I just think it's dumb to targer the innocent, that's all.

Perhaps, but taking your frustration out on a cashier who is just doing her job is not going to change the law.
