Reminds me of being in school
I thought my fellow bassists were cool and laid back, but it seems there's a lot of "don't say this" and "you can't say that" on TB.
Don't get me wrong, this is a great board. But just a bit anal in spots. |

There's a ton of people from all over the world...and that's a good thing. To keep everything both inclusive and friendly and happy and also 'all ages' there have to be some rules. Every rule you see is in place for a reason. It means that there have been problems, sometimes serious ones that precipitated the creation of that rule.
Further, there are only a handful of mods for thousands upon thousands of players and millions of posts...its a handful at the best of times, not to mention when the talk gets heated.

There's a wealth of information and it has to be accessible to everyone. If there weren't all the rules then there wouldn't be as many people, so there wouldn't be as much info, so there would be fewer people, etc., downward spiral.
There are plenty of other places on the net with less rules, and I post there to let off steam.
I come to talkbass because it's a place where you can ask a completely ridiculous question like 'What's the best 7-string bass with neck through construction under $3000,' or 'How many SVT's can I daisy chain together before signal loss? (need to power 5 8x10s)', and get a completely serious answers.
People need to be able to do that, and this is place for it. If it wasn't for the many rules, we wouldn't have the resource that we do.

Given the wide range of people who participate, less structure would result in many threads degenerating into "You suck!"..."NO, YOU suck!"....etc.

The judicious use of emoticons can help tone down a post that may be thought of as "aggressive".
Start threads/Post on topics other than religion, politics and other sensitive issues.
Also, the use of the following words in a post may help you come across less harshly: I suggest..., You might think about..., Have you ever considered..., Maybe this might help...,This may possibly help...,Something to think about....I don't care for....IMO...IMHO...IME.
Also, think about not posting everything that comes to mind....learning to edit your thoughts before you write them or speak them may be a sign of maturity.
Otherwise, just read and learn.
That's all you really need to know to be successful on TB.

I've been able to post anything I want (except for pictures of boobies and that one F with a few stars after it while commenting on the size of a very large bug for which I was warned) for the past year and no one has bothered me.
Complaining about the TB rules is like going to 7-11 for a free slurpy and then complaining that its not a 42oz. |

This is the BEST music orientated forum on the internet in my eyes because of the way it is run. I am a regular on other forums where I can be as offensive and as much of a douchebag as I want, I'm glad that this is the forum where knowledge and experience is more prevailent than scatporn.
