What are some brand names that are used more commonly to describe a product than their common names. This is what i came up with so far...

The definitive answer.

Coke = Coca-Cola
Coke = Pepsi
Coke = Sprite
Coke = Root Beer
etc.

I really think that's more of a Southern thing, though, Stu.

I've recently caught myself saying "soda" instead of "coke" and it makes me feel dirty and just plain wrong!

BTW, Re: your signature. Check w/ Buffalo Bros. Last time I asked them about those pickups, they gave me a VERY reasonable price. New price was actually less than I expected to find used ones for.

Some of the classic 'brand names' that were lost despite
name infringement lawsuits:

Elevator - was proprietary to Otis
Escalator - also a company name.

If I asked for a coke and someone handed me a sprite they'd get a punch in the mouth!

It's usually more like this:
  • What would you like to drink?
  • A coke, please.
  • What kind?
  • Sprite.
