Breakdowns! Why do people hate them so much?

Sign in to disble this ad
They are most prevelant in the metalcore genre, which doesnt help its cause - for some. Yet, from my experience breakdowns are what people seem to hate, or turn their noses up to. What is it about breakdowns in aformentioned genre that people despise?! Is it possibly an easy way of getting out of a hard patch of music?

Any answers...?

Breakdowns are annoying because then you have to stay up all night rubbing her shoulders and telling her she's not crazy, again.

they are a cliche in a genre you hate. What do you hate about metalcore? Im not interrogating, just friendly curiosity. It seems to me that metalcore is the marmite of all genres!

Big +1.

Metalcore lacks the balls and real skill of musicians in heavy metal and lacks the attitude and style and lyrical quality of '80s hardcore.

The cheese, the dull song structures, I can't find a thing I like about it. Unless "my last serenade" by KSE counts as a metalcore song. That was a good tune.

i gotta agree. The image of most metalcore bands is terrible. Kinda a role reversal from the 80's. Remember the days...mincing to Kiss in ya mums lycra leggins, surely some of ya's must have.

Killswitch are class. My curse, off of their latest album is a great track, i advise.

Hahaha that one was sweet.

Breakdowns are most seen in hardcore music. A lot of metalcore bands use them because they are a mix of metal and hardcore, obviously. Saying they are overdone is like saying solos are overdone, or chorus's. That's retarded. It makes the music what it is. There are a lot of more "tech" metalcore bands out there if that's what you judge the music you listen to by. Personally, I find the best breakdowns are in the newer styles of death-core like Despised Icon, because they are so sweet and tech that when they break it down it's so freakin' heavy that you have to dig it.

To each their own though.

Because they usually happen in the rain, on a grade with no cell phone reception.

Hardcore punk and metal

The breakdown in the hardcore punk and metal genres is where a band will usually play in half time, giving the feeling of a slower tempo. It is considered by some to be an important element in many songs of these genres and central to many bands, quite a few of which eschew traditional verse-chorus-verse songwriting. When played live, breakdowns are usually responded to by the audience by hardcore dancing or moshing. Vocalists also tend to throw in a single, repeated statement throughout the breakdown, giving those who are not dancing or moshing an opportunity to sing along. Many metalcore bands rely on having memorable breakdowns rather than memorable choruses and critics often accuse bands of placing too many breakdowns in one song.

The drums are usually simple with several cymbals and snare on the third beat. The cymbals are usually a china or fast crash with fourths or more common, eighths. In metal, the guitars play a set of rhythmically oriented riffs, usually on open strings so as to achieve the lowest and heaviest sound for which the guitars are tuned, so the dancers in the audience can respond effectively. Sometimes, these are contrasted with either dissonant chords, such as minor 2nd intervals, or pinch harmonics. These riffs are often accented by the drummer with double kick bass drums that follow the pattern of the guitars.

In hardcore punk, breakdowns tend to be more upbeat, using the floor toms and snares to create a faster, 'rolling' rhythm. This provides audience members with an opportunity to skank, mosh, or circle pit.
If so, thaty may possibly be THE SINGLE MOST RETARDED Wiki entry I have EVER read.
