Brett Favre (how do you pronounce his last name?)

Sign in to disble this ad
I have heard a lot of people (including broadcasters) pronounce his last name as FARV, but the V is before the R. It looks to me like it would be pronounced Fav-ray.

It's pronounced F-A-R-V.

And Gard has personal issues.

Nah...he'll be back for one more year.

They have the youngest team in the NFL and came within one game of the Super Bowl. They only have one free agent to sign, so they will be even better next year. Plus Favre had his best season statistically this year.

He'll give it one more shot.

It should be pronounced Fav-ray, being of French origin. But he pronounces it Farv, because he's been sacked a few too many times.

fav-ruh, probably... but yeah it's pretty hard for Americans to pronounce a name like that correctly. You'll hear the same letter rearranging when we say, for instance, Havre de Grace, MD. The French "r" is difficult to say and such words sound totally wrong with an American "r."

Brett, Deanna, their two girls, and the entire Green Bay Packers organization pronounce it 'FARV', so I'm going with that.

Heard/saw him 'splain it on TV once.

"Farv", he said.

French or French-Canadian would be "Fav-ruh", with the emphasis on the "Fav", and the "ruh" kind of swallowed.

The family obviously subscribes to the " 'murrican " pronunciation.

I have been wondering how the 'r' got there before the 'v'.

It actually had to be "dumbed down" for - most former athletes - that can barely pronounce it wrong, let alone try to do it the correct way.
