That was the original intention from the beginning.
They were just afraid of writing that into the show because they thought it was too dark for children's television.

Saturday's episode kicked ass. I was a bit disappointed at the one before that though. Good to see some more Discord action at least.

Also, alicorn Twilight will be interesting. Not necessarily good, but definitely interesting...

I really dislike the idea of Twilicorn. There is just so much wrong with it on paper, that it almost makes me want to quit watching the show. I think this marks the true end of the Faust/What would Faust do? era and marks the beginning of the Ha$bro controlled era.

I'll give it a chance though.
