The Acer laptop's I have seen are pretty high performers, for the buck... |

If that's not really you main area of focus and you'd prefer PC, I would actually steer a bit clear from Dell and head towards HP.
My company I've been with for over 4 years was originally buying HP's and then decided to try dell because they were cheaper. The failure rate of the Dell's was huge in comparrison to the HP's. In fact I was using the same HP laptop I got when I arrived 4 years ago until I recently got an upgrade, but never had any issues. Some of my colleagues that arrived after me were given Dell's and most have had to be replaced within 18 months sometimes much sooner.
The HP's might be a bit more expensive, but they're extremely well built and should last you well until you decide it's time to upgrade again in a few years.

I've had bad experiences, or my father has (working in IT, ordering and repairing machines for a company) and has had problems with just about every machine in one way or another.
As far as PC goes, Dell seems to put out a good product, he personally uses a Gateway tablet, and I've had nothing but wonderful experiences with Macs.
