Sort of a shame, but it was only a matter of time.
I once thought (briefly) about the SETI scereen-saver but the cost was outrageous. IMHO anyway.

Let's get settled on Luna, Mars, and the ocean floors first before we try to contact other civilizations. On the off chance we could talk to one, I think it would be best to have something to talk about. |

If you want to enter the discussion of what should and should not be cut by the government, you'll have to do that else where. Quote: |
Funding for SETI Institute programs comes from a variety of sources. Contrary to popular belief, no government funds are allocated for its SETI searches – these are financed entirely by private contributions. Other astrobiology research at the SETI Institute may be funded by NASA, the National Science Foundation, or other grants and donations. TeamSETI is the SETI Institute’s worldwide membership and support organization.

It is still in operation. The radio telescope facility that they use is not Hat Creek, but the Arecibo Radio Telescope in Puerto Rico, which is funded by both Cornell Univ. and the NSF.
You can obtain the software via seti's homepage at: SETI@home

(For the record, I don't believe in ETs. I'm just making a comment to the conversation)

I still think the cures for cancers and AIDS are somewhere on the ocean floor. We just have to go find it.
