I talk with office & corporate types on the phone daily. Men, women, no Geckos.
Anyhow, when closing out many of these conversations, more so lately. I have been getting an onslaught of the; "M...Bye" closings rather than a simple; "Thank you...(fill in blank) goodbye".
What purpose does the pre-fixed Mmm's serve other than to take up space where no extra words are needed or are necessary? Bye means 'Bye' doesn't it?
Is "Goodbye", or "Bye" now too harsh to be used by itself when closing telephone conversations?

| | | | Common etiquette is pretty much a thing of the past. An awful lot of people just don't know how to do simple things, like hold open a door for someone or say please and thank you.

<no problem with the implication

It's just easier to say "mm.." It's kind of like what BBQ is to barbecue only better.
