Called the cops on my neighbors last night...

My morning rant, a short novello by Relic:

Back story - I live next door to a college rental house and for the past 5 years, I have had off and on issues with whomever is renting it at the time. Everything from our driveway being used as a thoroughfare to get into their backyard, to cars parking in our driveway blocking us in, to all night loud parties, to vandalism of my property (beer bottles smashed on my driveway, car egged, pee stains on the side of my house..nice stuff) I have 0 tolerance for that stupid stuff.

This latest group of college kids were a little bit better. They're basically good kids and don't do any of that really goofy crap, the problem is that they act like friggen vampires.. their house is as quite as a tomb all day long as they're either studying at home or in class then starting about 8 or 9pm, their "social time" erupts. It's as though their day starts at about 9pm and goes on full-blast until about 5 am.
Now, that doesn't bother me in the slightest. I did the same when I was in college, but what does is the fact that they seem to have absolutely NO comprehension of the fact that a) everyone else is likely sleeping at 2 am so it might be a good idea to keep the noise down when outside, b) this is a residential neighborhood and not a college dorm so the loud shenanigans in the wee hours of the AM are not found to be cute and endearing to the residents who have to be awoken by it several times per week.

For some unknown reason, they particularly seem to LOVE to stand on their back porch and bs for hours even when it's like 13 degrees outside. Being that it's about 30' from our bedroom window, it wakes us up and keeps us up every time...
Now, I've tried to be cool towards them, and probably on about 7 or 8 instances, I've come outside and in a nice way (even though I was seething at them having awoken everyone in my house), asked them to keep it down a little bit. It's always the same response "oh sorry man, we'll keep it down, sorry about that, good night.." etc etc. I've tried the mean way - "yo, keep it the f down!!!!" They lower the volume for about 5 mins then it's right back to where they were before. You know how late night conversations sound: murmur murmur *loud explosive laugh*,*two or three people shouting over each other* then back down to murmur murmur..
During the big snowstorm last week, they were outside; 4 guys, 2 girls at 3:30 am having a snowball fight..screaming, shrieking, shouting, laughing.
Last night I reached the end of my rope. At about 11:45, they go out on the back porch and start bsing again, 12:15...still there. Talking loudly, laughing, shouting....one goes over and lays on the car horn to make fun of the way his buddy's car horn sounds..so I get up yet again, go outside and ask them - "guys it's f-ing midnight, can you pleeease keep it f down?" "Oh ok, sure man, sorry..."
I go in, it starts up again in 5 mins.. so I called the cops on their arses. No more of giving them the respect and common courtesy to ask them to their faces to keep it down. I now have to be that grumpy, curmudgeonly neighbor that calls the cops over every little thing and somehow, I feel guilty for doing it...what teh hell is up with that?? It's like having to admit that you are now officially "old"... bastages! GET OFF MY LAWN!!!!

I wouldn't have waited that long. Noisy people CHOOSE to be that way.

I would have done the same thing. It's another situation where common sense and respect SHOULD prevail but that concept seems to often be tossed out the window with todays youth.

You did the right thing. I don't know if I would have been so patient.

Nine MONTHS worth of repeated complaints to management re LOUD FM rock radio & stereos @ 3 - 4 AM courtesy of my inconsiderate neighbors (who've since moved out) did NOTHING.

If I'm saddled with more bozos in the future my response will involve a bass rig loud enough to get a band fired from a biker bar.

On a funny side note - I know that the cops must have been bored to tears before I called last night.... I called and explained that it's just a few kids and that they're not doing anything questionable, they're just simply making too much noise and wont keep it down even after I've asked them to face to face.... dispatcher says "OK, thanks we'll send an officer out"
3 mins later, 4 cop cars w/ flashing lights, one officer knocking on the door, one on the front lawn in the snow watching from a distance, while 2 others run to the back to cut off escape routes...and those were only the ones that I could see. All that was missing was a SWAT team and a helicopter!
It was strangely beautiful.

I'll be interested to know how it goes tonight. Quiet for the Relic family, or another episode of SWAT - Ewing, NJ?

There is nothing more frustrating than having neighbors like that. If you are nice they will probably ignore you and if you are sh**** about it they will retaliate. I would have the non emergency police number on speed dial.

ahh trick question! there IS no secret handshake because we're having to constantly use our hands to hike up sagging pants due to the ever-expanding gut and shrinking arse!

I have a loud neighbor (apartment next door) who used to turn on the Stereo at 3AM. As a bass player I cannot sleep when I hear a bass line coming through the wall.

I just figure when we have a new kid soon crying at all hours we'll have our revenge

What you didn't know is that it was the dispatchers first day, and they managed to get your neighbours address mixed up with that of a drugs raid...

Don't feel old or curmudgeonly, Relic. I've done that in the past, and I'm only 27. Or. wait.... Does that make ME old and curmudgeonly?? Where's my bifocals?

Great... since the college kids next door are mostly Asian-American, my wife (who apparently gets a free pass for being part Asian) is now calling me "Gran Torino".... lovely.
