No driver nor other woods though, you you'd be hard pressed to play an entire round with that.

More than likely, I'll be picking up a $200 Top-Flite set on clearance.
I've been doing a bit of research about getting into this myself, and it seems to be the best way to go.

As far as a driver goes, they are hard to hit, especially for a beginner. I'd get a decent 3 wood instead. They go almost as far and are more controllable. Personally, I have a 3 wood, a 5 wood, a 5 iron, 7 iron, 9 iron and a couple of wedges and a putter in my bag. For my game, that's enough. I can muscle up a little if I need extra distance. That doesn't work for everyone, but that's my game. I'd spring the $50, get a decent 3 wood and see if you like golf before you spend a bunch of money on clubs that end up sitting in a basement, garage or dumpster.

He let me use his driver and I was hitting them around 130 yards. I liked hitting them so i wanted to get a simple mess around in the yard set.

There are a lot of options out there, and if you are buying used definitely go take a good look at them and see what kind of condition they are in. |

It can be a very fun, and very frustrating game at times. But we all keep going out and doing it, and spending more and more money on it. |

A good 3-wood (as mentioned earlier) might be a better choice to start with than a driver. Hit correctly, you should get 250+ yards with the 3-wood. A good driver shot should be 300+ yards (400+ for a great shot).
I miss golf!

Nice club. Forgiving.

Nice club. Forgiving. | I have a cobra 3 wood. Awesome club. Easy 230 yards from almost any lie. I love this club. When I replace my driver, I'll seriously consider a cobra driver. |

Most pros will give you a few suggestions for starters at no charge, but don't expect an extensive lesson. If you're serious, they're available for lessons.
Go to a local golf shop and have them analyze your swing and take some measurements. Then you can do your shopping around. You'll be surprised what the right club can do for your game. |

While a $500 driver won't turn you into Tiger Woods overnight, a $150 driver will do wonders for your game over the one for $30 at WalMart. But if you just have no skills physically and mentally, nothing is going to help you.
