campus crime :(

I go to the University of Maryland and the town is known for its crime. I don't know what the current statistics are, but in the past we have had the worst crime of all US colleges. I think we hit rock bottom last night though...

2 strong arm robberies, one in the lobby of an apartment building. And a girl was picked up in a truck and raped in the woods...

Some people are such pieces of ****

There's a reason I carry a knife on a campus that's considered safe.

It's a cruel world indeed.

I work for the University Police in a county that had/has one of the highest homicide rates in the US as well as being known the Meth capital of Cali, walking the beat can be scary.

Typlons, is it legal to carry a knife on you in public? I've wondered if it was in case of an emergency, especially after dark on campus.

until last month i worked UMCP, nobody in the health center would walk to their car by themselves after dark, and those that would already had their keys out in case they needed to be used as a defensive weapon.
they also taught us personal self defense, but this stuff was for the staff, the students really don't have any idea how sketchy that place is until stuff starts happening again
college park is a scary place

edit: this doesn't take into consideration all the unreported rape that goes on there too...

The deal with knife legality, pretty much everywhere in the US, is if the police look at it and decide they don't want you carrying it, it's "illegal" and they can confiscate it or charge you with a crime. Doesn't matter if it's a Bowie knife or a box knife. If you look harmless and the knife is not "worn" in a threatening manner then the legality is not usually an issue because in that circumstance the cop doesn't consider you a threat. If you use it to defend yourself, then there's a whole gray-scale the lawyers have to deal with about whether you used excessive force on the attacker. If he was just punching you and you stab him, you'll probably get charged with assault with a deadly weapon and attempted manslaughter, meaning in that case the knife was "illegal". OTOH if he points a gun at you and you stab him, it will probably be considered self defense, making the knife "legal" more or less.

Don't want to get too political but in simple terms, why the hell does the US still have such relaxed gun/weapons laws?
Makes no sense to me.

What does the original post have to do with guns?

My mom used to carry a Kubiton (sp?) she got from the owner of the Karate Dojo a few years back. It was like a 4 inch metal cylinder she hung on her keychain which my dad explained to us its use was to "get that sonofabitch right in the kidney".

When you say that sentence in your head, think of it in the voice of this guy.

exactly!

and if anything... some of the laws are a little too strict. criminals know that no one on campus will be able to carry a gun and defend themselves. but if they were, criminals would think twice. besides, criminals are ALWAYS going to get guns. gun laws only restrict those that obey the law to start with.

I'd be interested in statistics regarding how much on-campus crime is gun-related vs not. I would think that knives or just plain fists are far more common weapons.
I like near a big college here in central NJ. Though we have had a few gun-related crimes on campus, there haven't been too many at all. Supposedly the worst are beatings, robberies and such nearly always perpetrated by thugs coming in from the nearby city. The students are easy targets I guess...

Yeah, it is a pice of **** to be legal and follow the law... over here many of the colombian inmigrants who are related to dealing substances carry guns... If i would like to i could get me my very own gun from the army sold to me , black market of course, by a soldier whos trying to make profit...

It really sucks that law is not here to help a-pre but only once the crap has happend

Right back on topic.

My campus is safe enough that my friends leave their laptops in the library if they need to go to the loo or something.

I find that insane. My laptop never leaves my side, and i carry a small knife around as well.

If some one wants to kill people, they will.Ted Bundy never used a gun IIRC.And there was this guy from the USA who murdered 48 woman,he only used his hands.(He says he killed 72~ people, only 48 was found.)

Guns are tools, they don't go berserk and kill people.
