Can you get screwed if you pay through Paypal?

Hey guys, here's the situation:

I bid on a bass on eBay. The seller had no feedback. I lost the auction but received a second chance offer. I know that's a common scam process but it also came through eBay. I was intrigued so I asked the seller.

I decided to risk it and went ahead and made the payment through PayPal. I hadn't heard back from the guy and noticed that the funds were listed as unclaimed after about two days which meant it wasn't a verified account. I decided to cancel the transaction.

Fast forward to today, I get a message from the seller appolgizing for the delay and that there was an issue with his account. He then went on to invoice me through PayPal under a different email account and not through eBay, though the invoice did state that it was the same item.

Not sure if I'm being paranoid or not here. Is there any risk of me losing my money if I still pay through PayPal?

Thanks in advance!

I wouldnt take the chance!

I think you should be protected but it does look fishy and if things go wrong it will be a lot of time and worries that i would rather avoid!

Actually, since the invoice isnt going through ebay i would defo not do it!

I've bought and sold many things thru eBay successfully. I wouldn't go anywhere near this one.

1: NO Feedback, NO way, NO how.
2: Second chance offer, just don't trust them.
3: Problem with his PayPal Acct, then changing of accounts, and not thru eBay.

Too many negatives here. Might be legit, but just as good a chance of it being a scam. I wouldn't throw my own money at this, and would recommend others not either.

TRUE! Using Paypal is no assurance against getting screwed, even though they claim otherwise in their ads. Watch your butt.

This sounds like a scam to me. I'd let it be.

Pass, there are always other basses and other deals from honest reputable sellers with positive feedback.

Among other things, bypassing eBay may mean that some protections are turned off, such as your recourse if the item doesn't match the eBay description. If they can't sell an item the way that eBay wants them to do it, then they shouldn't be using eBay.

Sounds like a scam. As fdeck added, if it's bypassing ebay, it's bypassing some of your protection.
