Can you read Thai?

I've had this buddha pendant for years, with an inscription on the back that may be in the Thai language. (or so a Tibetan store clerk told me) It might also be Sri Lankan or some other south asian writing. But the buddha image on the front is probably Thai.

It's translation is a mystery to me...

I'm hoping it's more profound than "Be sure to drink your ovaltine"

It says "The white man wouldn't go away without a present."

Why not stop by a Thai restaurant and ask someone there? You can get lunch while you're at it.

Thanks!
I wouldn't be surprised if it's not actually Thai, but we'll see hopefully.

Her answer: "Not in Thai. I believe it's an ancient writing/languae that the monks use."

So that means it's probably in Pali (the language they wrote down the Sutras in). Which also means it may be a quotation from a Sutra. I don't know if any souteast asian Buddhist temple has an email address that you could send that pic to. It would'nt have to be a Thai temple.

I don't think it's Pali. It looks more like some variant of Burmese/Myanmar script.

I checked out some Pali and your pendant does not look at all like Pali. So far the closest I can find is Laotian, but that's still not quite it. Doesn't look like Burmese either (unless there are several types of Burmese). I'll keep looking.

Just now looked at a short Cambodian text and found 3 similar letters. I've sent the pic to another friend - a doctoral candidate at UC Berkeley who is studying Tamil.

rosanne, I think you're on the right track. It does appear to be in the Khmer alphabet.
