New superbugs emerge in U.K., Asia
Canadian cases reported in Vancouver, Alberta

Last Updated: Friday, August 13, 2010 | 1:59 AM ET

"New strains of bacteria with the ability to resist even the strongest antibiotics have emerged in India and spread worldwide, including to Canada, researchers warn.

British scientists have discovered bacteria that are able to make an enzyme called NDM-1, or New Delhi metallo-beta-lactamase 1.

Genes enable the bacteria to make the enzyme so they can flourish even in the presence of nearly all known antibiotics..."

Remember folks, hospitals are for sick people and medical professionals.

Part of what made SARS as widespread as it was here in TO is the tendency of too many in our society to treat hospitals like social centres.

You know, I'm so jaded by the constant scare tactics used in the media that this stuff doesn't even phase me anymore.
I'll start worrying if/when necessary but at this point....meh..

Granted, this does have potential to be catastrophic I guess but so do a million other things..

+1 to the point where when I see the word "superbug" I immediately tune out whomever is speaking. Unless they're talking about Captain Trips, 'cause that **** will kill you.

LOL. I immediately forwarded to the wife titled "Captain Trips!!!"

Ah, well, we all knew it was going to be a bug. I was kind of hoping for a new apex predator though. Dragons would be cool, or an alien. But a bug? Wow, talk about anti-climactic.

jerry garcia will kill you?! but i have such fond memories....

i certainly hope this is another passing story. i am, however, in the camp that sees over-use of antibiotics as causing resistant bugs. just like over-use of herbicide causing resistant weeds. i think it is inevitable that living things will adapt and survive, but i think we benefit from being conscious and careful.

good luck to us all in this big, scary world....

Yup, I won't be scared by any epidemic/pandemic/outbreak what have you unless I hear the name Captain Trips.

I laughed when I heard about the swine flu.

Remember how SARS, Bird Flu, and Swine Flu each were suppose to kill off huge portions of the human population? Yeah. Never happened. And if I remember correctly I think swine flu only killed off about 14,000 thousand people world wide, and most of those people were already suffering from other ailments. I've become a huge cynic when it comes to media scares of world ending viruses and constantly mutating bacteria.

He co-wrote some of the lyrics with Garcia and Hunter.

I saw this story yesterday.
But....

What ever happened with the Swine Flu being the next "1918 killer Spanish Flu"???

Never happened.

If you remember correctly, it didn't make it onto the big time news, but back around Thanksgiving/Christmas there was some kind of killer virus/swine flu that was going around in the Ukrain that killed a bunch of people, and when they did autopsies, the people's lungs were charred black and covered in dried blood. They found out that the viruses were so violent that they caused a cytokine storm in the patient's lungs. The same thing happened back in 1918 with the Spanish Flu, it caused a cytokine storm which attacks the lungs and overwhelms them and kills you. There were rumors that this virus would be spread around the world by this pst April and everyone would be dead.

Simple solution?? Large doses of Vitamin D3. There are studies that were conducted on th 1918 Spanish flu patients and it stated that there was correlation between those patients that were treated outside in medical tents and thosw ho survived. They were exposed to Vitamin D.

What does the sun produce in our bodies?? Vitamin D.
