Hypothetically, if I went to the US and married someone and lived there, could I travel home when I get sick to get free healthcare? It would surely be a lot less expensive even without insurance in Canada. I'm just wondering if you have to currently reside in Canada to have it, or do you just need to be a citizen?

Who knows if it's true or fake. They made it look easy. If it's true, pack your bags!
I heard Canada wants to stop all these illegal Americans from migrating into their country. They want to build a wall or fence |

While the notion of not paying for health seems appealing, the quality of health care in Canada leaves much to be desired.

I pay $85 a month to insure my family of three at 90% after our $1000 deductible with $20 co-pays. I think that deal is just fine.

Try to get seen in emergency within six hours. The quality of health care is a leading reason for me to NOT return to Canada. I have first hand experience being hospitalized in Switzerland, Bahrain, Japan, Thailand and Canada. From my experience, Canada has the poorest. I was shocked at how much better it is outside of Canada.
We're in the midst of serious health situation with my step father in Ottawa as I type this. The delays and lack of attention is paying a heavy toll.
It's not free. You're getting taxed to death to pay for it and it is seriously underfunded. Canada needs to introduce private health care.

He was put into intensive care within the hour of his hospital arrival, and had his triple-bypass surgery over and done with the same week. IMO that's great service.
I'm not saying the Canadian system doesn't have it's flaws, but it's far from the disaster you make it out to be. |

I haven't even been to those countries, let alone had a chance to get hospitalized there. Come to think of it, I haven't even been in the hospital that many times in my whole 36 years of life.

I don't think anyone answered my question earlier....is there a higher level of health care that you Canadians can purchase if you do not want the "free" offering?

They thought about it, because, obviously, a health care system that centralizes everything tends to clog up. Worst times have been when there was not enough beds for patients needing them, and not enough rooms/equipment for bedded patients... like, beds in all corridors and you got to walk around a jungle of stuff that, if you tip over, menace someone's fragile life.
But people fought off the project of creating a multi-level health care system. Actually, many Canadians go down to the United States if they need "real" medical attention and can afford it.
Problem is... the overall opinion is that people who are willing to pay more for a better health care should not be able to do so. This would be creating different classes through the population.
My personal opinion: we're so socialist the only difference between Quebec (where I live) and Communist China is that WE don't have an army. Quote:

They get the full range of treatment, get seen promptly and are happy with the idea that their tax contribution supports everyone, for the common good. Their only bugbears are the cost of prescriptions and the fact that dental care isn't covered. The situation may be different in other areas of Canada though. |
