Well it seems Canada has broken loose of the no-Gold-on-home-soil syndrome.
Did anyone else (Canadians especially) notice how Alex Bilodeau was during the playing of the anthem. Granted, we as Canadians have the reputation of being "civil" or "polite," but come on Alex! Sing or at the least mouth the words - even en francais would have been good. I'm sure some will say it's BECAUSE he is Quebecois The opposite of his medal ceremony performance was plainly visible after the American girl smoked Canadian Jen Heil in women's moguls.
I guess we shall see true Canadian pride and patriosm when both the men and women's Canadian hockey teams take the Gold AGAIN this year

I don't. And, to be honest, I'm not that interested. It's funny, I think Canadians are known for not being the most patriotic people. However, I've noticed a change over the last few years. More and more I'm sensing a type of patriotism that I find kind of disturbing. A lot of Canadians seem to take a smug satisfaction in being on the same continent as the U.S.A. while not being American. I think there's also a growing sense of "hey, we're nice people - we don't start wars and we are tolerant of others - not like those people south of here. Let's be proud!". It makes me squirm. Did anyone see the opening ceremonies, with the Native American Indians? That to me says it all. The only identifiable culture we have in most of Canada is the culture the Canadian government has suppressed. We keep that culture neatly packed away on reservations until we need something interesting to display at an event such as Expo or the Olympics.
"O Canada, our home and native land..."

And I have no idea why they wouldn't be teaching the national anthem in schools...I came here about 12 years ago from the states to a really horrible secondary school (I swear it made me dumber), and we still had to say the national anthem every day..so, of course I've memorized it..
Oh and about the Native Americans being the only identifiable culture shown at the opening ceremonies, I have to say..what?? There was a very long musical part with fiddles and tap dancing that's definatly not Native American..although I would have liked something more about the many different cultures residing in Canada's major cities (in Toronto and Vancouver especially)..

I guess it has to do with separatists having a lot of seats on the political scene during one of our education system's past overhauls. It's probably the same reason I was taught of the good French people being invaded by the evil English army in History courses (exaggerating, of course).

| | | | maybe it has somethging to do with that whole period where Quebec didnt want to be part of Canada anymore...lol good times. Maybe not so patriotic anymore.
EDIT* didnt the french invade the aborgininals first? well, showed them the "christain way", then lost that position to the Bristh?
