Anybody have this problem? I'm on a mac.
I can go to youtube.com and play videos directly no problem. But an embedded video (like on somebody's youtube channel, or on a myspace page) brings up a message in the video that says "An error occurred, please try again later".
This happens in Firefox and Safari, but not in Opera.
This is extremely annoying... Anybody have any ideas? |

I need to reconfigure something, but not having any luck with the usual fixes that seem to work for most people.
And I did download flip4mac, no change.

Are you running 10.3.9 with all of its available updates? Which processor? A G4? How much RAM does your Mac have? How much free hard drive space?
Years ago, when I still used a 333 MHz beige G3 mini-tower (384 MB of RAM) and wanted to upgrade from OS 9.2.1 to 10.2.8, I learned that Apple was no longer selling Jaguar, only Panther.
So I explained my predicament to a small Mac dealer who didn't seem to be doing a roaring business and he agreed to burn me copies of OS 10.2.3 that he had at home on the sly.
Of course, if you're feeling adventurous you could always check out (legally free, Open Source) Ubuntu 10.04 for PPC G3, G4, and G5 processors: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ports/releases/10.04/release/
If all worked out well, your old Mac would have a modern Debian Linux-based OS which I found to be largely familiar after having used Mac OS 10.2.x, 10.3.x, and 10.4 (I now use Ubuntu 10.04 running on PC hardware).
If you decide to try Ubuntu 10.04, please:
- back up your important files first (this should be done before doing anything major to a computer), then
- download the ' Mac (PowerPC) and IBM-PPC (POWER5) desktop CD'.iso,
- vet its md5sum (to confirm that the .iso has downloaded intact. If you don't know how to do this, Google is your friend), then
- burn it to a 700 MB CD-R via Roxio Toast (or an Open Source CD/DVD burning utility, Google again), and
- boot up your old Mac with the new Ubuntu 10.04 desktop CD (it's a 'Live CD' which will boot into the Ubuntu desktop without changing anything on your Mac's hard drive until - and if - you decide to install Ubuntu properly).
The aim here is to boot your Mac with the Ubuntu CD to see how well everything works (or doesn't) before proceeding further.
Please note: there is w-a-y more software available for the PC versions of Ubuntu than for the PPC version.
If you have any questions just post them here.

Once backed up, all one's browser particulars can be retrieved should one have to reinstall an OS.
xmarks can also be installed on multiple machines in order to share and synchronize bookmarks & passwords between them.
I don't know how secure this scheme is yet (I just started using it two weeks ago) but it sure is a time saver when running two or more machines.
While xmarks is worth looking at for its own sake, perhaps a more surgical approach to the immediate problem would be in order.
Perhaps there's something going with Firefox and Safari's preference settings? Maybe the way they handle networking or page redirects? |

I haven't been able to download any updates for a while now. The last time I had work done on it the keychain word was changed at the store and I lost it. And can't change it to another word because I don't have the old one.
Any chance you know a way around this?

Resetting your keychain in Mac OS X
(Please scroll down to: To reset your keychain in Mac OS X 10.3 through 10.3.9) http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1544
So you have one of those all-white G4 iMacs whose body looks like the top half of a basketball with a chromed two-piece metal arm supporting an LCD display? If so, which one? The 15"or the 17"?
Could you please provide the exact model # of your Mac? (It should be on a sticker on the bottom of the machine.)
Thank you.
BTW. Do you still have the OS install CDs or DVDs which came with your Mac?

The password, it must be the administration password, not the keychain. The email opens with a password, but that password won't let me update anything.
You can see that there is a lot I don't quite understand about this machine....
The whole problem started when I downloaded the newer version of Firefox. The computer simply stopped functioning. That's when I took it in. I lost everything on it. So now I'm running the old (unsupported) Firefox.
I think I still have those disks somewhere.
I'll see if I can get the exact model number.
I appreciate the trouble you are going to with this. I'm pretty much at a total loss.

Since there were only two 17" G4 iMacs which used DDR RAM, I believe one of these is the specs for your machine (which includes a link to its owners manual that I recommend you download before proceeding further as it explains how to install more RAM. 256 MB is sparse. Your iMac will run better if it is given a 1 GB DDR DIMM, which here in Toronto sells for $35 so it's likely cheaper in your neck of the woods)...

Odd that the sales Order # is F9168LL/A; the same as the number above except F not M.
CPU type: PowerPC G4 (3.3)

Hard Drive Capacity: 74.53 GB

Would anything else from the profile be helpful?
More info tomorrow.
I really appreciate your help!

I really appreciate your help! | Hi Rosanne.
Please back up your important personal files to a FireWire 400 (IEEE 1394a) or USB 2.0-based external hard drive (or network them to another computer if you can) before attempting to do anything major to your computer. As a last resort, here's a slightly geeky how-to on resetting an OS X password without the use of an OS X install CD or DVD...
Change Mac admin password without the disk [Solved/Closed] http://en.kioskea.net/forum/affich-7...thout-the-disk
...but please try real hard to find your OS 10.3.x install discs first because they offer the safest way to reset the password, and if something goes wrong then at least you'll have the option of reinstalling OS 10.3.x (assuming that the install discs are not damaged).
If you...
- manage to back up your personal files
- can find your OS install discs
- succeed in changing your iMac's administrator password
- and if your iMac's hard drive is in good shape
- and its combo drive still works
...then you may wish to add more RAM:
iMac G4 RAM Upgrade http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S72X9...layer_embedded
--------
If you can't find your OS 10.3.x install discs then trying the PPC variant of Ubuntu 10.04 with your iMac (after first backing up your personal files) would be cheaper than the next practical choice: buying a new Macbook (about the same price as a Mac Mini + an LCD monitor + a keyboard + a mouse).
