Hey all,
The speakers in my explorer are biting the dust, relatively quickly. I have an aftermarket head unit in it, and they aren't the stock speakers, but this is my first time doing anything with the speakers. (i replaced the head unit and ran new wiring a couple years ago, but I just put my sister's speakers in it). And now that I've been reading on here a lot and understand how important matching the box to the speakers is important for bass cabs, I'm beginning to wonder, does it matter at all for cars, too?
I would guess not, because you're basically in the box, so it should sound good for you in general, right? Dunno.
Are there any specific speakers that would be better, assuming they fit in the speaker cavities for the explorer? Or will the cheap wal-mart speakers do? |

To help with bass production, I always put some kind of sealant around the speaker mounting bracket in the door. Something like this: Duct Sealant. You can find it in the electrical aisle at Home Depot and Lowes for about $2.50.
What is better will depend on how good you want it to sound. If you're not looking to rock out at high volume, then something from a department store automotive section will probably be fine.

You should replace the speakers, but you don't need to spend a lot of cash to get decent sounds in your car. If you want deep bass response as well, check out the Autotuba design by Bill Fitzmaurice. It works wonders in my car. Before it was mediocre and muddy with no deep bass, but now it sounds very crisp and hifi, and thats with the stock speakers covering mids and highs.

-Mike | High volumes are a definate neccessity. The world will hear death metal no matter how far away I am... Crutchfield actually has one of the speakers that I saw at walmart on their site. Might buy them... Quote: |

You up for adding an amp maybe?

-Mike | Been wanting to put an amp and sub in the massive suv trunk, but I want to get all 4 speakers working, first, haha
Edit: I forgot to mention, high volumes are a neccessity, but beautiful clarity is only optional. I am known in my circle of friends as the one with the incredibly loud system, but with a tendency to sound like crap for some genres of music.
