I'm going to (relativily soonly) be buying a newer car. I really need something cooler and more reliable than my 1998 Chevy Lumina, and want something that drives cool.
I want something thats manual transmission, pretty quick, and fun to drive. The Lumina is a little bit fast, but steers like a boat in oil.
Cost is somewhat imperative, but I'll get to that later.
Right now, Im looking between a Mazda3 (which can be had for about 15k USD), and a used VW Jetta (that I can get for about 9k, but with 90,000 miles). I kinda want something newer then 2001 or so.
Any opinions? |

I love mine though! Its pretty reliable.

Out of your choices, Mazda. I've known too many VW owners with electrical problems.

You'll only get a Mk4 Golf/Jetta for the money you want to spend, and they're not brilliant in the handling department (they've sorted that out on the newer Mk5's, but they're well out of your price range). The Mazda3 handles well, is fairly quick, has a good gearchange, has a decent chassis (it's the same chassis that's used on the Euro Ford Focus - totally different, and much better car than the one sold in the US), a nice interior, and is available as a hatchback for ease of lugging all your bass gear around! Since the US preference seems to be for sedans over hatchbacks, you might even be able to get the (IMHO, better looking) hatch version a bit cheaper than the sedan. |

For much less than $15,000 you could build an awesome sleeper Lumina.
I was gonna post a list of parts w/ pics and prices, but I accidently refreshed the page on lost it all. Lots of parts available though.

I'm for rear wheel drive myself, but the WRX is all wheel drive and handles real fine with piles of power....and it still gets good fuel economy.

| | | | don't get a Jetta. VW quality has gone down the crapper, repairs can be very expensive (At Euro rates & parts $$$$) and dealerships have an attitude.
Mazda 3's are great little cars. You can't go wrong with that, Get the Mazda speed 3 hatchback turbo one. that cars hot!
