car stereo questions!

Sign in to disble this ad
ok... im working on the stereo for my truck and im trying to do it on the cheap but i have no clue what brands are the best for the least... so i figured i'd ask here.

my truck is a 1966 F-100. i removed the gas tank from the cab and put buckets in, so theres a lot of room in it. I already have a set of pioneer 6 1/2's that i plan to mount in the upper rear corners, i was thinking tweeters in the upper front corners, i'm getting a set of new 6x9's from my friend for the lower front, and i plan to get a dual-magnet stereo speaker for the stock speaker placement in the center of the dash.

that just leaves the most important parts! I'm thinking 10's for subs behind the seats, and of course and amp, but idk what brand to get. and i still need a reciever in the dash. i want to have an i-pod hookup that i can mount in the center console.

but i dont have much money. $400 is the ABSOLUTE upper limit for everything in the 2nd paragraph, plus the tweeters... so, can anyone with more knowledge of this stuff than me lend some advice?

thanks much!!

Save your money. A good head unit is at LEAST $400. To get what you want, minimum $1200 for nice stuff. You could buy all that stuff for $400, but it would sound like a three year old banging on pots with spoons.

If $400 is your limit, do NOT go with subwoofers or you'll have to settle for such low quality crap that your music "will sound like a three year old banging on pots with spoons" -iamlowsound.

Since you already have the 6x9s then you'll need to complement them with a head unit and a pair of full range speakers for the front.

decent head unit (I suggest Alpine): $250
decent front speakers (I suggest Infinity Kappas): $150

You can always add powered subs later, as funds allow, but if you go cheap on the stuff you buy initially, you'll be sorry.

Ditto. Just make sure the head has a pre-out.

For speakers I suggest "hertz". Good stuff.

Go to WalMart and buy the "Fast and the Furious" sound system. I think Radio Shack has them too. Not only will you get a bumpin's system, you'll get some killer stickers.

Get a Crutchfield catalog. They're a great value, they sell only quality brands and their service and support are the best.

As A9X said, buy a head unit with a preamp output.
