car stereo speaker installation pt2

Sign in to disble this ad
hey all

i am trying to get a grip on my issues with this on going saga. my rear speakers are breaking up bad. things got weirder so i am re-seeking advice......

the stereo is 4 x 50 watts

the front speakers are stock, greman about 3.5 in

in back i have now tried:
3.5in stock
4in pioneers 20watts nominal
6 x 8 pioneers 40 watts nominal
6in no names 125 watts nominal

with any of the speakers hooked up in back, here is what i experience:

when the stereo is faded 100% front the little german speakers don't break up until about 85-90% full volume (and have impressive bass response)

when the stereo is faded 100% rear the speakers break up at about 60-70%

when the stereo is faded 50/50, ALL 4 speakers break up at 60-70%!

***? should i be looking at the wiring?

thoughts?

No, the $40 2X12 bass cab from AutoZone won't work with your Roscoe.

I had something similar happen a while back when I installed a CD changer with fm modulator it was like the whenever the left rear speaker was on it was distorted but when I panned front only or right only it went away. It turned out I had mis-wired a speaker positive for the Cd changer hot wire.

Sounds like a wiring issue to me. I would start with the simplest/cheapest solutions first and work my way down from there:

1.) Ensure all speakers are secure to their mounts. Use Loctite and torque.
2.) Check all speaker connections so that pos and neg are on the same inputs all around the car. Sometimes it doesn't make a difference, sometimes it does.
3.) Ensure speakers are all same impedance (2 ohms, 4 ohms, etc) because that could cause an issue that makes your head unit freak out.
4.) try another head unit. Yours could be defective.

Also, you never stated exactly what kind of head unit you have. Brands have BIG difference. I know for a fact that I will never own another Audiovox H/U. I do, however, love my current Alpine unit in my truck.

Try those in that order. If you have questions, PM me. If nothing else, try a local audio shop with a good rep. I'm an electronics & radio guy by profession and I still go to the specialists when I'm not sure of something.

Hope this helps.

Peace,
Greg

thanks

i was thinking there could be phase issues, but the speakers all have the different sized tabs for pos and neg connection. so they are all the same. unless the harness isn't rite. i will check that.

the stereo is a pioneer. i have the same one in my other car and it works fine (why i got the second one). maybe i can swap them and see what happens.

is there a way to check impedance? not all the speakers say what they are.
