Cards aren't just for old people!

Sign in to disble this ad
So I'm 22 and I've recently started to notice how few of my friends and peers play or even know about card games besides texas hold 'em.

I'm talking cribbage, gin rummy, pinochle, etc. Nobody even knows what I'm talking about when I ask them if they want to play. Cards were always a part of my family and that seems to be the case with the other people I play with (all 3 or 4 of them....)

So what's the deal.. do people just not play cards anymore? Am I just in the wrong crowd? How about everyone here?

Wow, here's my progression on thoughts when seeing this post.

1. Cool, someone else thinks that.
(click)
2. Wow, impressive for someone so young.
3. I play those exact games, and have done so for years with my uncles and parents.
4. I wonder if it's just them being from small town ND. (Reeder)
5. What!? He's from GF?

On the other hand, I think most kids would rather play videogames or do nothing at all. Cards take time to learn and are not "cool" to talk about to other people under 30. I'm 27 and we have a hard time finding people who will play. Try faster games to get them hooked: "pepper", "demon"(a form of fast fast solitare), poker, etc.

I played a lot of cribbage in college back in the 80s. Nobody seems to know how to play anymore.

It's not you, it's the people you hang with.

I really don't much care for playing card games. I'm good for about four games of euchre, and then it gets to be really tedious. 2 out of 3 games of cribbage? Yeah, OK, but 4 out of 7? no freaking way!

I married into a game playing family however. So time with the inlaws means mind numbing hours of dominoes, all manner of card games (Some with cards that have extra suits. Stars???? Wut?) and board games galore. They seem to understand and accept my non gaminess, and I've been known to go take a nap on the couch after a rousing game of "Pedro"......

I love and still play cribbage often. I also am a big fan of hearts and spades.

I think it may be making a comeback in New England with frequent/multi-day power outages!
Back in the day my friends and I would spend hours playing War, Gin, Crazy Eights etc...great memories! Simpler times

We just played the University of Sioux Falls in football this last saturday, if you pay attention to that sort of thing at all? (I'm in the marching band here, otherwise I really wouldn't care either if that's the case)

Anyways... I'm originally from a town slightly smaller than Grand Forks (Dickinson if you know where that is) and people definitely played more cards back home. We played cards all the time in high school.

I would agree. Probably has a lot to do with video games. Which game is little johnny going to pick, modern warfare or cribbage? Especially if little johnny's parents don't know any card games.

Used to play card games (and chess, backgammon, checkers) in the pub when I was 16-23 with friends or the then girlfriend.

Was a fun way to pass the time.

I have played a lot of card and dice games.

Now I'm always too busy.

Plus, I'm not doing time.

Hey! Thread derail! Thanks, totally didn't think of that site. durrr....
Also, Reeder is just south of Dickinson, by Bowman. My parents both went to DSU for college back in the days when they were still called the wonderfully politically incorrect "Savages".

I would play Spades or Hearts for hours with friends of mine.
Once, my brother and I went on a hunting/camping trip and it rained for three days. If we had not had a deck of cards and a cribbage board, I think that only one of us would have survived being stuck in a tent for three days.
