He's a truly inspirational figure- I really would have loved to meet him. Here's a thread I made about the Cosmos series I made a while back:

I wish to submit my belief that the "R." stands for "Redundancy."

Anyway, topic. He was a remarkable man. Definitely check out some of his works when you find the time.

I've got the Cosmos series on DVD. My father is a science/tech geek (he's a Mech Eng that designs actuators for Aerospace and Robotic applications in the NASA and .mil realm)... growing up in the 70s in my home, Carl Sagan was (and still is) an inspiration.

Very much. Bit of a Physics-head. Brian Greene, Brian Cox and Stephen Hawking fan. Wonder if CERN will help us define the standard model further. I think I have some Cosmos VHS tapes around. Had an undergrad research work on the magnetostatic effect in yttrium iron garnet. A quantum electron spin effect. Oh the old days!!

Thank you so much for posting those links, James. It made me realize how much I miss listening to him. Besides, it was very interesting how they made it into song.

More my kind of guy and a better mind than Sagan's.

I watched Sagan one in a TV interview once and was astonished to find that he was the most arrogant, obnoxious a-hole I had ever seen on TV to that point, which was really saying something.

Overrated self-promoter, one of the 20th Century's great egos, according to some I've heard who worked around him..

??? I dunno about that, a lot people love in the industry love Sagan....Richard Dawkins for example frequently pays homage to Sagan.

Maybe because his ego is on par with Sagan's

I agree with Bongo, but I'm completely OK with him having an ego.

Such a great speaker. A local radio station played parts of his last lecture. I was transfixed!

Sagan is my favorite author and there isn't a book of his that I haven't thoroughly enjoyed.

My most favorite book by any author is his
Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors.

Sure he had a big ego. But it ain't bragging if you can do it.

And speaking of big egos, Isaac Asimov once said that Carl Sagan was the only person he ever met who was smarter than he was.
