Carmageddon

Just saw a piece on tonight's news about shutting down Highway 405, one of Los Angeles' main highways for repairs and expansion. They said the traffic will be so bad they're calling it "Carmageddon". What say you, SoCal TBers? The end of the world as we know it, or much ado about nothing?

405 Freeway Closure Will Make July 16, 17 the 'Carmageddon' of Traffic Mayhem in Los Angeles - Los Angeles News - The Informer

This will affect me...only if they don't finish on time and it affects the weekday commute, which is what I think will happen. They have basically given 2 days to take down a whole bridge and clean it up etc..

Still, the 405 is the busiest freeway in the nation, and you could expect about about another 1:30 or so to just to get past it, maybe more. All the overflow is going to one lane canyons..or you would have to go past the 405 and take a very long way around to avoid it.

If you are at all familiar with traffic in LA you know that this is going to be a big deal. Granted, its on a weekend, and at a point about 45 miles from where I live, and I'll most likely still be affected by it. Practically anyone who needs to drive towards LA that weekend better leave early.

This is going to affect the traffic on every freeway in the LA metropolitan area. I'm not planning to go anywhere except my backyard.

I don't know what to make of it, but if they've given it the name "Carmageddon," that means that it is 99.99% certain to be media hype.

I was there a month ago. I feel that the article is pretty accurate. It will be like hell on earth for what is already hell on earth.

I've been avoiding the Sepulveda Pass whenever possible for years anyway.

Good weekend for bike riding.

I am so tired of hearing them use the term "Carmageddon" on the radio... There was a closure on the 110 the other day and they said "We have a mini Carmageddon on the 110" and I turned the radio off so quick. (I drive A LOT so always listening to the news radio...)...

If they start calling every freeway closure a mini "carmageddon" I am going to be annoyed...

I was originally thinking of heading out of town that weekend... decided on bunkering down at home with a bunch of movies and groceries

Hard to imagine they are destroying the whole bridge in less than 72 hours...

Doesn't it look like the big walls they put up where they cut away the mountains are going to fall over? EEEEEEK...

If I need to go through the Sepulveda Pass, I take Beverly Glenn...WEEEEEEEEEE

I don't know if people are panicking, but this is not supposed to start until the weekend, and my drive in today was noticeably slower...

I'll report back tomorrow as well.

Took me an hour and 40 minutes to get from santa monica blvd at sepulveda to sherman oaks via beverly glenn today. I guess there is construction going on in the canyon roads.... I wonder if that is going to be on during the weekend.

Seems there is a lot of road construction going on but I hear they are not doing any other roadconstruction during the weekend...

And guess what! They are only tearing down half the bridge... Closing the 405 again next year to finish..........

Take the 5 S to the 405, you'll avoid the closure.
