Carpal Tunnel Surgery - The Final (I hope!!) Solution

Sign in to disble this ad
Well it's done. For those not in the F Bass Club, I finally have had my carpal tunnel surgery on both hands and thought I'd share my experience.

I had my left hand done 3 weeks ago, sutures removed last week. It was the worst of the two in terms of carpal tunel symptoms - within 2 days it was better than it had been in years, now I'm just relearning how to use it fully

I was fully conscious during the operation (took ~ 15-20 minutes), and drove myself home.

The right hand was done last week (a few days after the suture removal on the left) - similar experience except I had full use of the hand within hours of the surgery! Only hiccup was that I jammed one of my fingers (clumsy!) a few days ago and had some swelling in a couple of the fingers. I am right-handed, so used the hand much more than the left immediately after the operation, as well. There is still a bit of leftover swelling, but it feels almost 90% back to what it was when I was much younger.

Here's what they look like today, 3 weeks after surgery for the left, one week after surgery for the right (dressing was just removed, sutures out next week).

Yikes. Glad this has gone well for you. So far I'm lucky enough to to require such intervention. Only other person I know who had it is a keyboard player I work with and his has not gone as well as yours.

Congrats

I wish you the best. I know it had to be messing with your head. Soon you'll be good as new if not better.

I am recovering from kypho-plasty surgery to shore-up my spine (6-vertebrea) as a result of the decimation I suffered from Multiple Myeloma. The stitches are out and I am feeling better & hopefully recovering.

Just being able to support my bass guitar weight on my shoulders is the next goal.

Hopefully we both get back to top form.

I miss gigging, rehearsal...the whole band thing.

Hi BIg O. Hi P. Aaron.

I wish you both a speedy recovery.

Perhaps a switch to a short-scale bass, and a switch to a semi-acoustic bass would be worth considering for you guys? (Not to mention micro amps & neo cabs.)

Best wishes for a speedy recovery - my mother had major reconstructive back surgery (different type and root cause) and, although it took a while to recover, (12 months - although she was 76 at the time!) she feels better than ever.

Bob -
Expect the palms of your hands to be sore for 3-4 months.
Most people actually feel like their hands are getting worse ~ 10 - 12 weeks after surgery. By 14 - 16 weeks they're fine.
Good luck!
Steve

Good for you. I had tendinitis surgery on my right elbow a year ago. Best wishes to you for a speedy and full recovery!
