Cat Urine

Sign in to disble this ad
We put our 18 year old cat to sleep last week and had our carpet shampooed. After the carpet dried, one of the rooms had many urine stains where our cat must have peed. Toward the end of his life, he couldn't navigate the stairs to his litter box. We wonder if we let him go on this way for too long...

Does anyone have any suggestions in how to remove the urine stains?

Add oxyclean to your carpet deep cleaner's clean water reservoir? The only other thing I can think of is to douse the carpet with ortho home defense spray (for some odd reason it can remove the strangest of things from surfaces/fabrics), then douse with scalding oxyclean water, then run carpet deep cleaner.

I was able to remove several years worth of tobacco tar from a white shirt this way (except washing machine replaces carpet cleaner in that instance). Shirt looks almost brand new.

Bissell sells a carpet cleaner solution that already includes oxyclean as well. Try that first.

One of ours gets a bit leaky sometimes - I use generic sodium percarbonate (which is the active ingredient in oxyclean) and it works fine, so +1 there.

I'd be a little worried about a dark carpet - test it on an out-of-sight corner first to make sure it's colour-fast.

We ripped ours out. It gets in the wood and such underneath the carpet too. That we painted with scent blocker and put lenolium down.

Yeah, speaking from experience with an older cat that can't find the box, if it hit the padding under the carpet or the floor under that, you have to remove it. You're simply not going to get it all out.

if you pull up the carpet (which is probably going to be necessary, the urine got into the underlay too, no doubt) you can also paint the floor with kilz, once you pull up the carpet. it will block any stains from being stinky, or spreading. useful on ceiling stains too.

You can always dilute it 10:1 with distilled water and carbonate it to make Bud.

We ripped out the carpet and went to hardwood.

I'd have the carpet commercial cleaned, and let them know what you're working on.

Isn't that the chick that sang 'Respect'? Not sure what she has to do with cat urine and how to make it taste better but if she's giving advice, I want to hear it!
