There is a political aspect to this, but it crosses party lines and very few of the people quick to comment seem to be aware of that.

They've been going for a few weeks now.

The costs of the cleanup and the extent of the legal liabilities are unclear. Also, the costs of deep-water drilling overall could rise significantly if new safety regulations are enacted. There may not be much upside from this price for a long time.
