Just remember the steps... there are things you know and do, but forget when there's not an actual patient there to remind you. I'm not... but my wife's a paramedic and just did an assessment for a new job. She skipped "breathing sounds" because it's automatic in a sense... she moved to the next step with out voicing that step (as one would if sounds were normal) and nearly missed the diagnosis.

It's a parrot test. Practice it all out loud. Don't just memorize the steps and think you'll be able to remember to say the words.

Get a practice dummy, make a practice dummy. The hands on aspect is really important.

You can talk ABC's all day but if you're doing physical assessment and don't practice it physically...you're gonna end up with that examiner that puts a small caliber bullet hole somewhere like an armpit or between the gluteus maximi.

Some of those guys cam be real nut crackers. I know. I used to be one.

I'm a career FF and EMT/Cardiac.
They usually give you a skill sheet ahead of time with the main points that you gotta hit to pass. Try to memorize those. it's been a few years since I've tested and most of it is second nature by now. I assume this is a basic EMT test? If you get screwed up on the practical just remember your ABCs. Good Luck!

And definitely verbalize everything you're doing. They are probably watching as you palpate whatever you're checking right then, but what if that's while they're writing down a comment? Guess what? You skipped over checking that area.

So actually say what you are doing the whole time.

Think in fairly straight lines for the test. RIjake is on the right path for that. They will actually give you a sheet that tells you what they are looking for. Do those things.

And relax. It's not that hard if you don't make it be. Extra stress always makes things more difficult.

All good advice. Remember the basics and everything else will fall into place. ABC's first , the begin your secondary survey. Verbalize everything. Note the new rules for CPR too.
