Cheap things/tours to do in Canada/North US

So i'm going to Canada in a few weeks, but will have some time to kill and travel on my own before I move out with the lady.

Just wondering if anyone has done any bus/coach tours, knows any places I should go visit where i can stay in Hostels etc.

I'm flying into LA and at worst I may have to wait there a week or so for my Canadian WHP visa to clear, and even if not, I can come back down anyway. I'd like to see NYC and Seattle (and surrounds) for the music and culture value. Will also be basing around Calgary so things in AB/BC side are preferred, but if I go to the eastern end for NY I'd like to visit Toronto etc as well. I need to keep it on the cheap as well incase I have trouble finding work straight away.

And if anyone wants to catch up or show me around anywhere as well i'm keen.

Hey dude, I forgot to tell you this in a pm, but there is a good thing called 'hop on, hop off' bus tours, whereby you can jump on and jump off at any place that catches your eye.
I had a brochure called 'moose tours' or something.. I'll try and find the web address. If you get real desperate for a bed, maybe try the site 'couch surfing'....although always remember, safety first.
