Just want to share some of the magic that has been hitting my area as of late. I've been getting about 4 sessions in per week. Fall is the best time of year in Southern California. This is why.
The water in my local area is still 65-67 degrees. I trunked it yesterday. So nice, putting a pair of trunks on and paddling out for a quick surf after work. http://www.surfline.com/surf-news/sw...9189/photos/1/ |

Fort Point can only be surfed on a rising tide. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO PADDLE OUT ON A WANING OR DESCENDING TIDE. You'll get sucked out under the Golden Gate and won't be able to return to shore until you hit Ocean Beach (Depending on the swell you might end up on the other side of the bay). Not a fun place to be stuck on a surfboard. Great white feeding ground aside, this is a major shipping fairway. BUT, Fort Point is an amazing scenic left hand point break right beneath the Golden Gate bridge.
Ocean Beach is a giant peaky beach break notorious for some of the toughest paddle-outs on the coast. You have to be in good shape for that wave when it's big. But on the plus side, when it's small to medium its a great place to learn. You'll need a wetsuit that is at least 4/3 mm thick. Booties and hood are a must too. |

Last Sunday was big enough to use it, and I made the mistake of leaving it at home in favor of my 6'10". Offshore winds and they're calling for waves 7-8 feet on Saturday. It's going to be a combo swell too, so their should be big hollow peaks. Hopefully it will be big enough for my new gun.
Here's the forecast.
SUNDAY - GOOD
SURF: 4-6 ft. - shoulder high to 1 ft. overhead and good conditions. |

It rivals Waimea in Hawaii as a premiere big wave spot. Half Moon Bay is about an hour south of San Franisco. http://www.surfline.com/surf-news/no...9128/photos/1/ |

I kinda shuddered a bit when I saw The Wedge... I did a royal face plant there the very first time I went bodysurfing (hey, I'm a Montana boy)... one second I'm all estatic about being able to body surf and the next second I'm about six feet in the air over... sandy beach.
Gawd that was awesome!! |

Gawd that was awesome!! | Yeah, when I was a kid, about 20 years old me a couple of lifeguarding buddies went bodysurfing there when it was about 25 feet. I caught some mean big barrels, but as the tide got higher a nasty backwash started coming into play. I got held at the top on one particular set wave and couldn't get down the face. Suddenly the wave kind of pitched with the backwash and I got thrown right in front of the face. I was totally freefalling. Same thing as you, except add about 12 feet to it. I belly flopped in sand, somehow nailing my nuts, and literally blacked out. I guess the wave actually drilled me even further into the sand as it crashed right on top of me. One of my buddies is the lifeguard supervisor for the Wedge. When I came too, I had an oxygen mask on and saw him and a few of my other buddies huddled around me. Apparently, they went out and rescued me. Went to the hospital for an x-ray (without insurance ) and checked out. Didn't return to the Wedge for about six years. I've since hit it and have had some fun sessions there. I have a lot of respect for that wave. It's crazy.
